previous to experiment, planted with

September, 1871, and manured with

which was thoroughly harrowed in.
l'wo quarts of seed was then sown?a
much too heavy seeding?and lighlly
covered. V- hen the clover had attained
the height of eight inches, two
barrels of land plastertwas applied as
lop dressing. probably one bushel
would have done just as much good.
'Idie next dune, ('.872) (>00 pounds ol
good clover hay was taken from the
plot, at one cutting, the second crop being
allowed to remain 011 the ground.
In lsV't the yield was about the same
as in 1872.
Ju the fall ol 187:1 the plot was reset
dod, al'tcr applying one and a hall
barrels of fowl manure and two wheelbarrow
loads of compost. The crop
was top dressed with plaster as before,
except that only half a barrel was
used. We saw the crop in dune ol the
prosi i;t year, when only a small portion
of it had been cut, and judged
that the yield would be even heavier
than that of the previous years.
Here, then, wo have, on what would
he called poor sandy land, between
lour and live tons of clover hay to tlu
aero. We have given, in substance.
Major Leliloux's statements as to how
it was made. Now for the figures:

We have taken no account here oi
the aftermath, or second crop, or o!
the permanent improvement of the
soil, which must inevitabb result from
its decay upon the ground, nor of the
faet that on the second season the only
expense was seventy-live cents for cutling
and curing, leaving $8.25 net
profit from one-sixteenth of an acre ol
clover, or an average of $0.81 J for twyears,
which would he $80P per acre,
Divide this by two, if you will, and
still it would pay to raise clover?it
fact, clover always pays, wherevei
even a moderate crop can be grown.

How to liaise a Turnip Crop.
Take a given number of noros of
even an old broomsedge field, turn it
over well and deeply with a two-horse
plough, suleoil it possible, harrow
thoroughly and roll. Lay olVtho land
in rows two-aiul-a-half loel apart; with
a wide and deep furrow. If there be
not stab! manure, apply three to five
hi ml red pounds of Ammoniatcd Sup<
rphospiiate of Lime; the addition of
some potash would l>w useful; throw
the dii t l aek with two furrows, ami
level t he rid-o; with a board. Use
I ho Woathersliold drill, or some other,
costing about nine dollars. Sow with
it two rounds (d seed to the acre.
The Weather.slield drill opens the furrow,
drops the seed, covers, and then
rolls it by one and the same process.
When the plants have formed the
third leaf, which is rough, thin thern
out with the hoe and hand to about
eight inches apart, give them a good
ploughing with a narrow scooter, and
the cultivation 1 completed.

A Serious (Question.
[Now York Ilerald.]
The ITica Herald, alluding to the
third term discussion, says, it "started
us a newspaper joko" in these columns,
hut some dull people took it for serious
work. Harm lias been done by
making people familiar with the
thouht. l'clhaps our namesake now |

to the American people if a
1 hit of pleasantry on the part of the

1 widely discussed subjects that we remember
in our political literature. If
the 1'tiea Ilerald has any remembrance
of the somewhat celebrated series of
articles that livst foreshadowed the
controversy that now excites the
country, and the dangers that threaten
republicanism, it must know that
, none more grave and earnest were
ever addressed to the nation. Mr.
Sumner was not given to jesting on na
, 11011:11 subjects, and wo recall now the
cxtraordinary impression the discussion
made upon him. lie certainly
did not regard it as a "newspaper
' joke."
Without referring especially to the
points so often presented wd repeat
that the great danger of a possibility
' <>i the third t.enn, as it then appeared,
still cxisls. That danger consists in
apathy, of earnest republicans, like the
editor ol the Utioa llerald, who hesitate
to put the good ol the country
. above the party, or who, more correetly,
see only the good of the country
in the success of the party, Geni
oral Grant is to-day the strongest man
[ in the United States. His party is
, dominant. If ho chooses to ho nominated
lie can secure the nomination,
! and there is nothing in the record ol
Mr. Huberts and his associates to prev<
nl their support of t hat nomination,
fins is certainly a situation ol grave
danger. It is most assuredly not a
"newspaper joke."
What should he done is, that carn?

to prevent a recurrence of the
present daie-er the e011st.it.11tum ?!mnl.l
he so amended that no 1 'resident could
hold ollice for moro than \one term.
The real danger is in the vast power
that lias heeu allowed to crystalize
around the 1'residency and the Senate.
Diminish this poA'cr, make the Presidi
