county, was on Friday night last assaulted
by a colored man named Smart
Fanly, who struck him two or mure
blows ou the head with a heavy cudgel,
said to be a r.cw backer handle.
Smith now lays in a critical rendition,
scarce any hope ot living. On
Saturday night, the last heard Irom
him, blond continued to How from the
wounds on his bead. Dr. J. II. Grant
is the attending physician, And the report
is, that he says the skull bone is

the affair or not, hut from all we can
learn, though a difficulty might have
becu in the way, no affray or conflict
occurred between thcin up to the time
of the striking; nor was there bo much
as a word spoken between them on the
occasion up to the striking of the lirst
or second blow.
The negro is now in jail hero, and
his version of it is that two or more
colored men at the mill had threatened
his life, that on Ins way home
from the store he bad his haeker-helvo
with him lor the purpose of guarding
against some vicious dogs; that after
passing all the bouses, be intended
stepping aside, but the moon whined so
brightly that he moved on to a clump
of bushes, and as he neared it a man
.steppe d out to meet him; that he believing
the person to be one of those
who had threatened his life he struck
the blow, or blows; that Smith spoke
and asked what he was striking him
for; that after that lie knows nothing
about it. This is his tale, and we
think it rather clumsy.
