wrapped in the profound elocution of
our friend Fisk on store and house
rent, we wero suddenly aroused from
that devoted, dreamy, hazy attention
usually attendant on us upon such
occasions by the sudden entrance of
our colored friend Will Hughs, who at
once told us ho had come to be put
down. We told him it was impossible
for us to do it, but begged him to .vait
until this week, and let the Court try
its hand on him as usual. "No, no,"
said he, "I want to he put down on this j

\ A Poor House Steal.?Last week
Mr. A. L. Sellers, who lives near the
North Carolina line, had his horse
stollen. In pursuit of his horse he
heard of him at Ilickinans & Reads,
lie found his horse here last Sunday
iu possess* on of Mr. William Skipper,
who had bought him from a mulatto
negro at Bull Creek a few days previous.
The negro went on his way to
Georgetown county rejoicing with the
money in his pocket.
Skipper gave up the horse on the
owners proving his property. No
further doubt need be had that a stealing
negro will pteal a broken goard.
Of all sorry stolen hroses this must
bave been the sorryest, and we think
Skipper may rejoice at happy ridiance.

colbjseal monument to
the memory of Gen. Lee which is now
rapidly being constructed, under the
direction and skill of Prof. Voleniine.
will, when completed, be the greatest
triumph of act- and mechanical skill
ever produced in this country. The
structure will be surmounted by a
reclining figure of Gen. Lee enveloped
in his military cloak. The lbrm will
be- finely carved in marble, and the
expression of countenance rendered
with life-like correctness, in order to
complete this grand monument at the
jearliest f>onsible day, the Executive
t 'omnaitlcc of the Memorial Association,
of Lexington, Va., which is

as Gen. Pendleton, Gen. Terry, Hon.
William McLaughlin, Col. Preston

A batch of German Immigrants?
some twenty-five or thirty?are about
to arrive in our town, from Carleston.
Perhaps they will arrive even before
we go to press. At all events they
will be here by Thursday or Friday ol
this week. And then we shall see
them?and, beholding immigration
face to face, will perhaps believe it.

for two years in Charleston, came to

further orders.

And now that the Immigrants are at
laat coming, we should make it our
study to treat them in audi a manner
as will make them cling and take root.
We have lived much among Germans,
and we know them well?the moat
honest, the moat reliable, the ntoat
indomitable, the beat-educated people
in the world. When we get the Ger- 1
man* among us. we get not only a fine
working and financial element, but a
Hue political element, and, par cxcelIt
ce, a tine social element. The German
will he a help>r on every able.
tie ia a man we can come into clone
contact with in every point of view.
We can eat with him, sleep with him,
laugh with him, pray with him, go to
God's table with him. Look at the
Germans of Charleston. Look *t the
Germans of Augusta. Look at the
Germans of the great and powerful
Northwest. And truly they are the
men who have made it great and powerful.
Hut to make them cling and take root
among us, we must appreciate them.
We mast be kind, and gvnerous, and
thoughtful. And we must get rid of
a great many narrow old notions as regards
labor.
Immigration, beyond all doubt, is
the one hope still remaining lor South
Carolina. And its success lies in immediate
and vigorous effort. Many
Counties above us have taken hold of
thin matter :n earnest, and will soon
reach better days in consequence. And
why should Edgefield County not soon
duplicate her white citizens by white
immigrants? Let every man, who
has either money or land, bring at least
one immigrant into the County.
