The Poor Farm was re-sold, at the risk of the former purchaser; it was knocked off at 6295. We learn that Mr. Ilolliday, m\e of the County Commissioners, has arranged the bid with his own means, and will secure the use of the farm to the County, until they can work the County out of debt, which the present board arc using every means in their power to do; and we have no doubt but that if the next tax is promptly paid they will succeed. This thing of running the County in debt, has- been a severe lesson to us, and we hope that after the present indebtedness is paid oft; we shall become a wiser people. Sundry oilier of real and personal property was sold, but did not bring quite enough to pay the costs in the eases. The day wore on smooth and quietly until late in the evening, when John Ilerring, brewed a fuss, and beat his weaker vessel over the head with a stick; he was promptly arrested, and lodged in jail. Trial Justice Johnson heard the ease on Tuesday, and sentenced hint to ten days imprisonment in jail. John thinks it a hard case, that he is not allowed to scale his own Herring. The most fearful fire, threatening the destruction of more valuable property, tjfcm any fire, that has ever been known in this County, occurred at the Greenwood Mills on last Friday. The Mills are situated on a tongue of land between a large lake, and the main ^ 11^ river; on the North side there is an extended bank of saw dust that has been accumulating for years; upon this sgj[ A ^ " i Jk THE dust some hands hud been engaged in burning slabs and waste stuff; at 12 o'clock iho bell rang lor dinner, all hands knocked off and no 0110 was left in charge of the lire, in a few minutes the wind sprung up and whittled round so as to drive the sparks and Haines toward the Mill, the tiro ran over the surface of saw dust like a race horse, and when the immense vd*umo of black smoke gave warning, it had made its way to a large pile of Slabs and refuse stuff in immediate contact with the Mill; here it raged with redoubled fury, anu for a moment dispair ol saving - i * " mo properly seized everyone who beheld llie devouring tlames; luckily there was attached to the Mill a signal whistle, the signal of distress was given, and the neighbours for a distance of over lour miles, in every direction, were quickly gathered to the fire; here all, white and colored^ women and children, worked with a desperation unparalleled, and through their united efforts the valuable property of Messrs. W. L. Buck & Co., was saved from destruction. !%'nrro*v Kail Itoiuls.
