Stephen Wilson, a UjjuI cuter, (whose

Friday, b} William tlagham, and two

charged ^ith stealing from (lnt/-ham
mi miry t^<thing, rusty iron wedges, nml
other articles too numerous to mention;
4 hut )ik?i a bag of dry gourds, not exceeding
in value $19.
The case was heard before Trial .Justice
Johnson, last Monday, who found
tin; accused guilty of Petty Larceny,!
nml sentenced him to Iwen/y-live days
imprisonnicul in jail.
We must, commend Trial Justice
Johnson for all decisions he has made
in criminal eases brought before him.
A sentence of six months imprisonment,
would be a luxury to Stephen
Wilson, and a punishment to lav payers,
who^pay lor his feed in jail. The
iact is, this race of people were taught
by their parents, when slaves, that to
steal from their owners was no stealing,
but simply taking; and now, that they
have no owners to steal from, and are
not permitted to linger the State finances,
they steal lVoill each oilier.
The first thing that met the view of

as barbarous and uncivilized, is reestablished.,
then' will he no check for
