THE STORM.
This section was visited on Friday
.l\/imnnn nml nifrht. with fine of the
greatest storms of wind and rain known
since 1854.
The river oposite the town, from seven
to nine o'clock on Friday evening, was
^ashed by the wind into a fury of waves,
which dashed against the shore, pitching
the surf over the sea wall on the Bay.
Some damage was done to fences and
Bhade trees in town, but nothing serious.
Ou the Port Royal railroad, above
Yemasscc, the rain was the heaviest
known for many years. In many places
it appears to have corno down in waterspouts.
The banks and cuts seem to be
li'.e^ally flattened down by an immense
weight of water. The water in some cuts
stood three feet deep. On the pine lands
near Allendale and Early Branch the
water was six and eight inches deep in'
places where it would seem impossible
for water to stand.
Six or eight water-ways were washed
out on the road between Yemassce and
Bruusons. A freight train met with an
accident on Friday near Altmans, from
the giving way of a small tresscl. The
engine went over safely but a car loaded
?:.t. __1* tVirmmli nnd another
Willi BttlU U IVI\V liUIVU^ia OHW
freight car followed it. No person was
injured.
At Duck Creek tresscl and at Penn
Branch, the banks were washed out by
the freshets.
Some bauks were destroyed that have
stood all strains siuced 1SG1.
The mill dams were washed away,
damaging the road in several places.
Gangs of men were early at work trom
both ends of the road, and it will le
in running order again ere these lints
reach our readers.
At Bull river the blow w as very severe
The little steamer Bull Ricer was sunk
while lying at the wharf. She was
raised on Saturday without diffis'iliy.
Several flats t0 phosphate
?Cufpanies were sent adrift, some fences
aud trees destroyed but no serious damago
resulted.
The weather has since the blow been
fine aud cool.
On St. Helena the gale was equally
felt. Several sha .ties were blown to bits
while the oottoii was somewhat injured.
The house of Mr. Bui tun was blown from
the underpinning and turned almost upside
down, The family were inside but
were not seriously injured. They crawled
out of the windows' aud took refuge for
the night iu ^ shed.
The freshet in the Saltkehatchie river
is the greatest since 1841. The water ou
Monday was up to the slcecpers on the
railroad bridge. Tho stream poured
through Buckticld Culvert and forced its
way into the Pocotaligo river. The
swamps aro so full that the deer have
been forced out of them aud tho hunters
are enjoying fine sport among them.
Mr. Wni. Cuthbert saw nine of them on
Monday withiu a short distance of \'euiassee.
The G'ale Elsewhere.
The gale on the Georgia coast was very
severe. At Thomasvillc over $10,(XX)
worth of property was destroyed and ouc
woman was Killed by a falling house.
At Quitiuan two churches were blown
down and several shops and dwellings
demolished. The cotton crop over a
large section was badly injured by the
wiud and rain.
The railroads suffered badly in every
direction. On the South Carolina railroad
near Reeves turnout the Augusta
night express train ran into a broken
culvert, 'lite eugine and five box ears
went into the creek. The engineer, \V.
H. Breekman; W. Boar, fireman;
Smalls, fireman, and Ceo. McMauus,
train haud were instantly killed.
The oldest inhabitants in the neighborhood
agree' that the fall of rain and consequent
tise iu the waters is entirely
unprecedented. The embankment where
the accident occurred is fully ten loot
high, and the water not only washed all
the earth away, but flowed over the top
of the track. The flood extended a 1
along the line of the road. At a point
three miles above Branch vil e, on the
Columbia branch, the road, iu a level
plain, was covered with water to the
depth of several feet, and the track was
wa3licd up, causing a detention of the
down Columbia train on Friday night.
Reports from points along the line of the
road state that five mill dams between
thi? city and Columbia were broken by
the flood, and that a large amount of
property was destroyed by the water.
Or* *K.* ii/tethnMwtiilli 11 I llA wul 1?

represented as being equally unprecedented.
Near SulUir's depot, about
fifty-eight miles from the city, a culvert
was wa-hod away, but the damage was
discovered in time to convey warning to
the down train due at live o'clock on
Saturday morning. All along the road
the evidences of the flood were visible.
At one point the track lor a mile was
covered with water.
On the Central Railroad, in Georgia,
an accident similar to iho oue on the
South Carolina Railroad L reported by
telegraph. On Friday, a culvert about
eight miles from Mill?n was wa bed away
aud the engine ot i freight train, with
six freight cars, precipitated into
thcchasui. The em u.ccr, William Storey,
a fireman named Tim Scott, and a
train liaud were instantly killed, aud
buried beneath the ruins.
In Charleston the gale was accompanied
by a heavy rain-lall. which during the
storm amounted to Ih'j'i inches. Some
injury was done to the smaller eralls in
the harbor, but the vessels iu port rode
out the gale in safety, and were extremely
fortunate in their almost entire escape
from damage* The steamship Virginia I
