J6F* Dr. J. A. Johnson has been
appointed a member of the board of
health in place of Win. Elliott, Esq-,
resigned.

A dead calf was found last week
in Weirs pond, creating a Tory great
disgust among passcrs-by. The board
of health sent the marshal to abate the
nuisanoe.
tag" It is reported * that Geo. W-.

has been appointed Colonel of the

usual. The prospect is. therefore, that
unusual damage will be done to the crop.
The fuBeral of Robert M Fuller,
at the Baptist church, on Sunday last,
was very largely attcuded by all classes
of our oominunity.

Julius Mayher, mail agent on the
Port Royal railroad got into a quarrel in

named Rafe Knight. Meybcr was

A Hull Cose.
Our town was agitated for several days
last week about a bull. Port Royal island
once possessed the noble animal in
dispute, and, in order to distinguish him.
cut a slice from his left ear. St. Helena
8iw and longed for him, so it is said. At
all events Port Royal lost him; the herds
wore left without a protector; the kino
wandered disconsolate and forlorn through
wood and brake, and would not be comforted
because he was not. A long search,
extending over four years, at last was rewarded
with a sight of hiui on St. Helena.
There, with the inconstancy of his
sex, he had gathered around him another
harem, Virgil alone could paint the
rage of the inhabitants of the two contending
isles. For days they paraded up
and down our usually quiet streets, calling
on all the gods to certify their claims.
Justice Williams was beseiged in his office,
and his mind was harrassed with
volumes of conflicting testimony. Meantime
the bull himself caliuly chewed the
cud of sweet and hitter fancy, doubtless
mindful of the pleasant ties which had
grown up to bind him to St. Helena, but
also remembering bis gentle and fruitful
companions, when love was young,
mourning for him on Port Royal so many
years. Port Royal at last succeeded in
gaining the car of justice and the bull
was relegated to the custody of his old
owner, never more to wander amid the
fresh fields and pastures new of St. Helen's
pleasant isle.
Burglaries
On Tuesday night a burglar entered
the house of J. G. Thompson, on Bay
street, through the kitchen window,
and then went up stairs into the front
bedroom. Just as he had secured the
watch and chain of Mrs. Thompson
she awoke and startled him by an exclamation.
He darted down stairs and
made oft' so quickly that Mr. T.
could only get a shot at him as he
ran out the front gate. A companion
was outside watching, and the two ran
up Bay street, disappearing in the
darkness. The watch is a Swiss patent
lever, with American hunting cases.
The chaiu is of solid links and is about
live feet long. One hundred and fifty
dollars will be given for the arrest and
conviction of the thief, and seventyfive
dollars for the recovery of the
property.
On the same night the house of M
Ilunn was entered through a pantry
window. Nothing was taken but some
pies, butter aud dressed chickens.
Probably the parties were the same
that made the raid on Mr. Thompson.

The County Fiscal Fear.?A Maudaiuus
Refined.
Some weeks ago, W. J. Vcrdicr, Esq., r
Attorney for J. W. Collins, made appli*
cation to Judge Mahcr for a writ to coin- [j
pel the county commissioners to i ay ?
certain claims which were contracted between
September 1, 1K72 and November
1/1472. The commissioners had refused
to pay them out ef the proceeds of taxes
of this year, holding that the fiscal year
for the countv began at the same time as
the fiscal year of the State, viz . Nov. 1.
Judge Maher heard the counsel's argument
on the 10th inst., and on the 22d
deuied the writ prayed for by the petitioner.
This apparently settles the dispute
in favor of the position taken by
the commissioners. J. W. Moore represented
the count}*.
