The Trial Jostise Court*
On Monday evening M. H. McBride,
was brought before Justice Carleton, on
the complaint of his wife Mary McBride
charged with assault and battery upon
her. The defendant pleaded guilty and
was fined three dollars and costs, which
seems to us to be remarkably cheap.
"He who lays his hand upon a woman,
save in the way of friendship is a wretch,
whom it is base flattery to call a coward.
The dog star rages. A family fight
took place on Sunday morning last, just
as the bells were calling christians to
church. On Monday Ruebcn M. Rutledge
entered a complaint against Eli
Bellinger charging hiin with assault and
battery. It seems from the testimony
that Eli
Bit and tore.
And scratched and swore,
So that the ground,
For yards around,
Was kivered with the gore.
He was fined by our gentle justice the
email sum of three dollars and costs.
He got nearly the value of that sum in
meat taken from heads, ears, bauds and
legs of his relatious.
High living at the Sea Island
Hotel lias resulted in a case of gout.
The county treasurer is the sufferer.
A Bathing House.
A company was formed last week to
build a bathing house, opposite the hotel^
One thousand dollars has been raised.
Mr. Paul Brodio furnished a plau which,
if adopted aud constructed will give us
au ornamental and convenient bathing
house.
t&T The intensely hot weather of the
past week has prostrated many children.
New Schedule.
The change of schedulo on the Port
Royal and Savannah & Charleston railroad
will avoid the long wait at Yemassec,
and shorten the time to Charleston,
Augusta and Savannah. We have not
received the new schedule yet, and
therefore have njr advertisement of the
Port Royal road this week. Next week
it will be found as usual.
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MEETING.
June 24.
The Board met at eleven o'clock.
Present, Dr. Paul Pritchard and Geo.
Waterhouse. Win, J.Vcrdier, Esq., arpeared
before the board and demanded
that a check be issued in lieu of one held
dated October, 1872. Mr. Verdicr argued
that the check was illegal because it
did not contain the clerks signature, and
that as it was issued in October it came
within the present fiscal year. He quoted
the acts of September, 68, and of March
1871, and subsequent acts, to show
that the fiscal year for the counties commenced
on the first day of September, of
each year.
The board decided to take legal advice
on the subject, and to .withhold their
decision until the next meeting of the
board.
Dr. J. A. Johnson, deputy coroner,
made a requisition upon the board for a
room and furniture for his office. Granted.
