From the "West to the Sea.
The first through shipment from the
Mississippi Nalley to Port ltoyal passed
through this city yesterday. It consisted
of a ear load of white corn, 160 sacks,
shipped by Mannaduke <fc Browu, of St.
Louis, to J. Bich & Co., at Port ltoyal.
On the IVeight bill which a"oouipnuicd
this shipment were written the words"
"St. Louis hails trith jcty the first
through shipment from the Mississippi
Nalley to the new port. May the rise
and progress of Port ltoyal bo second only
to that of the Quccu City Of the West."
Thus is the trade between the great
grain producing region of the West and
the new port on the South Atlantic coast
formally opened. The future will demonstrate
day qy dy.y the vast importance of
the last connecting link in the great airline
from the teeming and wealthy Mississippi
Valley to the Atlantic Ocean.
We predict that the Port Itailroad will,
at no distant day, be one of the most important
in the South.?Augusta Chronl

A painful result followed nn attempt
to settle the weight of a mule in Louisville
the oth<* day. Bystanders could
not agree in their estimates, but each
made a bet 011 his own. Then a man
who was reputed to he a good judge oi
livestock, got behind the mule, and was
measuring his quarters, when something
in the mule appeared to loosen. Just
before he died, the man gave it as his
opiuiou that if the mule was as heavy
before as he was behind, he must weigh
not tar Irow 47,000 pounds.
The Proper Way to Lead a Cow.
Every woman will tell you that a man
can ho led easier by putting an arm
around his neck than by pulling his hair,
but wo never know (ill recently that the
reason you can't lead a cow behind a
wagon is because she objects to having
her horns pulled. The other day a
rcd-shirted emigrant passed through hero
on his way to Carroll County. His family
and household possessions were in a
covered wagon, to the hind end of which
was fastened a cow. lb-hind her with a
sharp stick walked the emigrant, giving
her a smart welt occasionally when she
hung back. Every iio\V arid then she
would brace herself and stop the team,
and then in unclerieal language he would
be-ci-eh her to go 011 marking each forcible
period with a prod of the sharp stick.
The poor cow rolled her eyes, and lolled
her tongue. The iioor emigrant, too, was
dusty and tired, but his voice and stick
didn't fail him. She had suddenly halted
the procession in front of the post- office,
and was shaking her head in reply to his
earnest Qntrc&ties* when a man called out
to Red Shirt that he did not "understand
cows worth a cent."
"Well what are you going to do about
it?" asked Red Shirt.
''Why just take that rope oft her liorti-?,
niid put it round her neck, and she'll
load as <piict as a lamb 1 f she don't I'll
follow her a mi c myself."'
'J'hc rope was changed lo her nock and
flic team started. She gave a look of
surprise and walked along. '"Well thai
beats all,* said Hod Sliin, and without
a word of thanks he mounted his wagon.
The procession and cow followed with
countenance as placid as if .die were walking
home at milking time.?Amci lou;u

?The most accommodating man we
ever saw was he who was captain of a
steamship which plied lietween New
York and Port Itoyal during the war.
One day a soldier lost his cap overboard,
and went to the captain about it. The
old gcnt'cuian said it was impossible to
stop the vessel to recover it, hut lie kindly
offered to make a mark 011 the rail
where it went overboard, and get it
when lie cauic back.
