A clay last month was celebrated in

'i iie young party of 18C8 resolved up->n
a vigorous campaign against 'li* j
abases fostered by the pro slavery
spirit which had so lone ruled the State.
It determined upon an honest,c-eonom
ical but liberal government of the peo- I
pie by the people. Education was to '
be encouraged; the children of those
kept io ignorance for the conservation
of slavery were now to be furnished j
with free schools; every encourage ment
was to be extended to those desiring to
own land; taxation was to bo equalized
and all the people were to bear its bur
dens; integrity, morality and competency
were to be the qualifications for
office; all distinctions of class and color
were to be swept away; the moral, material
and political standing or the people
was to be elevated by freedom and
equal rights. In fact a political mel ;
.leaiumVas looked for, and S ?uth Carolina
was to exchiuge her had eminence
as the hot bed of treason and s'aveiy |
for one of lovaltj*, good government'
and prosperity.

THE PORT ROYAL RAILROAD. I
Eid>rscmciit cf Half a Million cf its
lionds.
We condense from the Augusta
Chroni' h ihe following report of the
proceedings of the directors of the
Georgia Railroad on Wednesday:
The original proposition of the Port
Royal Railroad was that the Georgia
Road should endorse 81,000 000 of ihe
tn st mortgage bonds ot tlie Port Royal j
road. For this endorsement the Geor- j
gia Railroad Company was to receive '
?1,250,000 of the stock of the . Port
Royal road, absolutely, while a power
oi' "attorney was to he given to the
bond of directors of that company to j
vote ?100,000 more of ib-e stock, thus
giving the Georgia Railroad a eontrol\
og interest in the l'?rt Royal Railro:d.
The directors held a meeting on
Wednesday and again took the proposition
of the Port Royal Railroad Company
into consideration. To 'c were
present Pnsid nt King and M >srs. E.
E. Joues, Edwd. R. Wave, A Pou'lain,

Claik. of the board. Three?Messis.
Tii 8 J Burncy, George Ilillyer, an i
Johu Davids>u?were absent. After
discussing the matter for some time,
the directors, by a vote often to Ihree,
decided to accept the proposition.
Judge Reese, *>ne of the three voting
nay, then notift- d the board that application
for an injunction to prevent
them from endorsing the bonds would
be made to a court of law, aid. in all
probability, granted. Upon this the
boaid decided to send a committee, to
confer with Mr. R. E Ribms. of the
firm of Bobbins Appleton & Co.. who
was in an an'j lining room, to inform
hiri < i what had b.-en stated by Judge
lie se. Mr. R >l)!?ins finally decided
that it w n d , ; best for jihe Port Royal
R.i l.o.sd Company to accept the endorsenr
ni of uoO of tin irh.mds by
5he G orgia IUlli ad without a lawsuit,
than ?1.(HJ<'?.U'J0 with it. To the
end rsenient of this amount of hoods.
the stockholders who had threatened
to procure an injunction were not opposed.
The board, tin red'oic, reconsidered
their action, and unanimously aceepted
the second proposition of the
Port Royal Railroad Company, and
entered into a contract with it, as follows:
The Georgia Railroad, on its
part, endorses $500,OOd of the first
mortgage bonds of the Port R >yal It idroad
imur diatdy, while the P.u t R yal
Company turns over >0-5 0;)) of its
stock to the Georgia Railroad, ahso- ;
luttly. and gives it a power of attorney i
to vote $".!).?,000 additional of sto-k. ;
the power of attorney to be irrcvokable i
for three years, and the Georgia R ii!road
to have tk." opti >n, at tlic*ecd < f
that time, to purchase the stock at its ;
marktt value. It wnl be seen that it
really places the Port R ?ya 1 Railroad
under control of the G -orgia Railroad
Company. We also learned that the i
subject of the Savannah and Charles I
ton Railroad was before the hoard.
This road was obtained control of by
Mtssrs. Rob'nns. ApplHon & Co., j
some time since, for LI*--sum of vi00.Oh'i.
These ointlcnu n olll-red to relinquish
tlie road to the Georgia Railroad
Company if they would pay thi
above amount, not in cash, but in
binds. The b ard appointed a committee,
eoijMsting of M< ssrs. M. P.
Stovall, Pv. E.Ihitlrand Geo. T.Jackson,
to c mf. r with 31Robbhis in regard
to the ni itter. with instruct ? s
to report at the June hkm ting <3f the
direct-ors. W e understand that it is
probable that the committee will re
port favorably upon the propositi.>?, I
provided the condition of the. road is j
such as to warrant such a conclusion.

OUR COLUMBIA LETTER.
Columbia, S. C. May 20.
providence interferes.
Oa Wednesday night last about 11
o'clock a severe storm broke over the
city. The wind was very violent, and
did a good deal of damage to buildings
in all parts of the city.
Considerable damage was done, many
fences and some twenty or more trees
were blown down. The roof of one
house was Mown off, and fell onCliflbrd
Cooper, who was in bed at the time
inflicting injuries that will probably
prove fatal. Some houses had twenty !
or thirty lights broken by branches and j
trees beingJ)!own ajrainst them.
O ~
The fury of the storm seemed, however,
to have b?en mainly directed to
an attempt to overturn the State capital.
Its foundations however were laid
in old times, and were meant to stand. |
' The winds b'ew and the rains descended
and beat upon that house and it j
fell not, f)r it was founded upon a i
rock.'" The roof, however, was put on
by Jim Allen, and here the wind found
a chance to vent its rage.
About forty-live feet in length and j
most of the width of the roof of the j
west wing was blown away, and the 1
1 heavy timbers, boards and debris went j
; through into the hall of the House of j
Representatives, causing a complete j
ruin of twenty or more desks, as many j
; chairs, and the gorgeous carp*t. The I
seats formerly occupied by Mobley, |
i Ityas, McD.miel, Jamison, and several i
others of the noisy members, were completely
destroyed, and those brilliant
i lights of the legislature c mid uot have
j escaped death h id they be. n in their
sga'is at the lime.
Many people are of the opinion that I
this ought to be a warning to those
who want an extra session. Others,
| of the profane, think it a good thing j
: for Dennis, as a nt w carpet., new desks, j
more chandeliers, etc., will be needed
; to put tilings in order again; while a

THE EXTRA FESSIOX.
L ad' ig Republicans and the soundest

the call l icks but two signatures of
members of the House. The members I
of the Senate are nut so free in signing ,
the call.
Still it is believed that the Legisla- .
ture will convene. Il would be very
convenient to have it in cession and
then c ill the State nominating eon ven :

large numlxr. p:t?hardy a mnj >rit3', of
the delegalts to the conventiuu wou'd
consist of m.-mbors of the General Assembly
or be among it? attaches. The ,
State \v.?u!d thus pay the expenses of j
the d-legatps. Another reason urged
in favor of the extra s; ssion i.- that the
