One thing seems certain that there will
be no money to pay any of the regular ap
propriations before next December. An
other thing is equally certain that thetas
levy is totally insufficient, and we shall be
worse olfrn xt year than this.
The schools in the state are generally
closed, and they are likely to remain closed
until next year. State Superintendent
Jillson contemplates issuing a circular
recommending the closing of the schools
at once except where there is money
to pay the*leaches promptly.
This condition of affairs is having a disastrous
effect upon tile republican party
which is justly held responsible for it. II
the legislature had fearlessly voted a sulli
eient tax levy and at the same time defeated
every sell*. me for taking money out
of the treasury except for absolutely necessary
expenses, the state to day would
have been an honor to the party. The
course pursued has been the very reverse,
aid wc enter the most important canvass
of our history as a party on the defensive.

It is reported that Tom Mackcy has

is said to be a difference of opinion in regard
to the county officers in Charleston.
Tom wants some removals in the interest
