Foreign Advertising Representative FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1922 ' ABOUT PRIMARY ELECTIONS , I It may seem idle to talk of discontinuing primary elections, but there are some facts in regard to the 11 ? -.A!?!? ma4- Ka ftVOV. mauer which ouvuiu ?iw u\. looked. In the recent primary there was as much cause, we imagine, to' bring out a full vote as there will be) in ordinary election years. Notwith-j standing fifty thousand people who( enrolled for participation in the| primary elections did not cast their! ballots in the first primary. In the second primary when the j race for governor had narrowed to j two men and each man, backed in. some measure at least by a faction, was doing all that he could to get j out the vote, ably assisted by mana-j gers, helpers, and friends, more than iorty thousand of the enrolled I voters failed to go to the polls. In Abbeville County nearly one thousand men and women who en rolled to vote lauea to go out ana; vote in the first primary and nearly | that number in the second. Added to this is the fact that a-, great many people for one cause and another did not enroll. In the State of Georgia, in the recent primary, according to figures which we have .seen, fewer than two hundred thousand people voted. If the people shall grow disgusted with the primary as a means of selecting state officers, or officers of any kind, and shall continue to xe-j fuse to vote in the primaries, it will! not be long until the primary vote j will represent a minority of the peo-j pie of voting age in the state. In; that case, the primary will not be; efficacious to keep people from car-; rying the appeal to the general elec- j tion. If there is danger of the ne-i g:ocs taking part in elections, a sup-j posed danger which we think is: greatly overestimated, we do not: think we are going to get rid of the': danger by the primary route, not al-j ways. Not all the men selected for office in the primaries are men of indiffer- ] ent ability and attainments, but most! of them are. The kind of men nomi- ] nated for office encourages some! people to believe that it were bet-; ter to have nothing to do with these j elections. Better men, .selected in j some other way, would command J votes from people who do not nowj ei roll for the primary elections, or who if they enroll, do not vote. It is as easy to have political i< bosses with the primary elections as j ] it is without them, and the class oi'j bosses is not improved. . LOCK. B. Lawson, who has made for himself and the delight, not to say shame, of all his neighbors really the finest thing in the way of a lawn in the much neglected "chow part'' of our great City. We do not know how he did it, but he did, and it is worth seeing, because if there is one thing more than another that ought to engage the attention of the yard owners in this town, because in a very definite 1, .ense it is selfish, it is knowing how to make their yards look their best. Lawson, who was born and brought uj: in Abbeville.?Spartanburg Journal. MR. BARNWELL APPOINTED County Chairman for Abbeville In Campaign for Greater State Fair Mr. W. M. Barnwell has just been appointed County Chairman, for Abbeville County, in the state-wide campaign for a Greater State Fair, The purpose of this campa:gn is tc raise $100,000,00 for permanent buildings and improvements for the State Fair, which is held at Columbia each year. This money is to be raised by the pale of life membership in the State Fair Association at $25.00 a member, which gives the holdei free admission to all State Fairs and a voice and vote in the management of its affairs. This makes eacl member an active stockholder ir one of the State's greatest institutions. It is the present plan of the Fail Association to make the South Carolina State Fair second to no othei state fair and has already revisec the. premium list so as to make the exhibits this year depict the greatness of out state agriculturally and commercially. The quota for Abbeville Countj is seventy-five members and foi each ten member life memberships secured by the County Chairman and hs workers one farm boy can bo awarded a free trip to the Farm Boys Camp which will 'be held on ;he fair grounds during the fair. In addition to these trips any farm boy between the age of 12 and 18 who sells four or more life memberships before September 30th will p.1 so be given a free trip to the :amp.
