Wise at the lo I cal bar, Janie Bell Quarles, the wid ow and administrator of Herbert | Quarles, negro, has formally made ' j demand upon the county of Mc 1 Cormick for the penalty of $2,000 for the alleged lynching of Herbert Quarles in June of last year. Herbert Quarles was the negro who, it is alleged, criminally as saulted a highly respectable white woman as she went to a mail box near her home about one milo from Plum Branch. The negro was hunt ed for two days and one night and when found admitted having com mitted the crime and was put to death. The widow demands upon the county for a penalty of $2,000 and states that unless the matter is com promised suit will be institued for the full sum. GOES TO TOP MT. MITCHELL Mr. P. H. McCaslan has returned from Waynesville, N. C., where he has been for the last tw> weeks. He says he had a good time and came [ home greatly refreshed. While in Waynesville he traveled around con siderably. He went to the top of Mt. M Mitchell and had to travel 67 miles to get to the top from Waynesville.
