If these dead twigs anc limbs are allowed to remain on the tree throughout the summer, the bark beetle will gradually spread -over the entire tree and destroy it Since the fruit buds for nexl year's crop are formed during late summer, it is very evident that ii a good crop of fruit is to be had nex' season the proper care should b< taken of this year's growth. Fir?t Defeat For Abbeville in Over J a Week.?Abbeville Allowed Only Two Hits. | (From Anderson Tribune.) j Playing stellar ball in almost eve ry position the Electricians found their mark yesterday and bested Abbeville 5 to 0, in one of the hard est fought shut out games yet seen at Cater Park, Jones, hurling ace of the locals threatened to join the no | hit, no-run immortals but finally conceded a couple of singles to Ab beville batsmen Reames and Erwin 'nagging one each in the 'first and second innings respectively, j Anderson hit Kennedy hard, tak-l (ing a total of eight hits, including a triple and a pair of doubles in their eight innings at the plate. Dutch Vaughn led the slugging pro cession yesterday, lambasting Ken 'nedy for a triple and a single out joi four times up. Dutch was called out on some close looking strikes third time up in the fourth. Runt Herron opened on Kennedy for a long double and a single while Clyde swatted out a double. Werner, Jones 'and McAllister each played good | singles at various intervals of the j?ame. The pitching of Jones was big league stuff from first to last, the star moundsman apparently getting better and better as the game pro gressed. He allowed one hit in the i first and one in the second inning and then tightened1 down for the rest of the game. Scoggins and the Galloways, all heavy hitters availed nothing: -asrainst Jones' delivery. The work of Clyde Herron at short attracted much attention yesterday, he scooped up half a dozen hard ones and starred throughout the game. Erwin in right field for Abbeville had a crack day Friday. His spectac ular catch of Bannister's fly in the sixth was one of the features of the game. Lucy Bruce Galloway, who Jean hit as well as play second base ! made one of the best looking pick ups off second seen in some time. Bannister was again at the bat and sent a hot grounder Bruceward, or rather to the left of Bruce. The big chap chased head down for it and grabbed the ball as it passed him on| the wrong side for a right hander and was loudly cheered for his a chievement. Laurens' lone run came in the sixth on an error by Leaman, a sacrifice hit and a single by ulbertson. Livingston sprained his ankle sliding to second in the fourth inning. DIRECTORS OF LEAGUE MEET At a meeting of the Carolina Lea gue directors held here Friday, at which all clubs were well represent ed, the game between Abbeville and Anderson in which McMilligan par ticipated and which was properly protested by Manager Clark, was ordered repiayea at a aaie to ue sei tled by the clubs, and the game stricken from the club standings. By throwing out this game Greenwood goes into the lead with a standing of .560, Anderson is second with .545 and Abbeville right at her heels with a percentage of .542 and Laurens bringing up the rear with .375. Some race, eh? Many charges and counter charges were brought at the meeting, but the above was the culmination and the principal thing done at the meeting In the future a club can protest an ineligible player within one week after the player has participated in a game the former rule being that the protest had to be made before the end of the game. NEW AUTOMOBILES BEING PURCHASED Columbia, Aug. 5.?Approximate ly 1,500 new automobiles were reg istered with the state highway de Dartment during the month of July, which is one indication that the peo ple of the state have not as yet been reduced to the proverbial "thin dime." To be exact the number of "brand new" automobiles registered was 1,477. These figures indicate that the people of the state are de termined to ride regardless of the boll weevil, political races and a few other evils. In the new registration Ric'hland leads with 198 while Greenville is second with 153.
