We talked to another man today 1
who?does not believe in using calcium
arsenate for killing boll weevils. He
is afraid of it, he says. He is an ig.

on. Who is it that has told through
out the country the stories about this
poison killing livestock and people as
well? Whoever he is, is an enemy
to every man who plants cotton and
who is prevented from using the poi
son. Negro preachers are run
ning over the country preaching the
doctrine that the boll weevil was
' *-? i? ?
place U Here uy iue luanc: ao a
scourge and that it is sinful to kill
it The negroes must hoe out the
grass which the Maker caused to
grow, and kill the snakes which He
caused to crawl and bite people, but
the boll weevil is a kind of sacred
thing, according to their preaching.
People who believe in such preach
ing are not much more credulous
+feon a thp npnnlp who believe all!
kinds of stories about persons and
livestock being poisoned by calcium
arsenate. Not a mule in Abbeville
County has died from biting cotton
which has been treated with the poi
son. Not one in South Carolina has
died. And all the stories about peo_
pie dying from using the poison is
fiction pure and simple.
There is yet time to be warned, if
the farmers of Abbeville County
would make cotton, and if those who
'* are interested in the production of
a good crop would assist others. The
Augusta Chronicle of yesterday has
an article from Prof. C. A. Whittle,
of the soil improvement committee
of the Southern Fertilizer Associa
tion, which speaks the truth, ana
which we are reproducing with the
hope that it may be of benefit to our
readers. It is as follows:
"Rainy, cloudy weather favors
hatching out of weevils. Dry, hot
weather reduces the hatch, but hot
dry weather in July, August and
September can not be depended on
to keep the cotton out of danger when
the early infestation is heavy.
"Last year Oklahoma had hot, dry
weather during the latter half of the
growing period, and Oklahoma suf
fered very heavy losses From boll
weevils. The weevils were abundant
early and propagated fast enough in
spite of the unfavorable weather, to
clean up the cotton.
"The point is that hot, dry weath
er is not such an important control
factor except when the cotton is
small. As the cotton plants grow, the
shade they make reduces the possi
bilities of the infested squares dry
ing out under the sun's rays.
I "In a portion of the Southeast the
rains are frequent and excessive.
Cotton would do poorly even if there
were no weevils. These rains are
from thunder showers and are there,
fore skipping some areas, as they usu
ally do, so that close to regions of
worst rain damage can be found
fields doing splendidly because they
have escaped excessive rains.
"South Carolina, especially is spot
ted by the vagaries of thunder show,
ers, with a tendency to more uniform
damage as one nears the coast.
"The important point for the farm
ers who are suffering from excessive
rains is that the boll weevil must be
fought the harder.
"Do not let the mud or water in
the rews or water on the stalks
stand you off from fighting the wee
vil.
"You are a loser if you do. The
irtdPet pnpmv is fchpn m?kinc its hard
est fight. Two weeks of almost daily
showers in late July or in August will
allow the boll weevil to ruin any cot
ton crop if the weevils are numerous
and are not fought during the period.
Can calcium arsenate dust be used
(effectively under such weather con-i
ditions? '
"If calcium arsenate stays on the
cotton twenty.four hours it will get
in its deadly work. Rains are not so
regular that a twenty-four hour pe
riod may not be found every four or
five days. Farmers are generally
weather wise enough to pick out a
dry twenty.four hour period.
"When the showers are numerous
it mav not be possible to find a time
j when the air is perfectly calm and
!dew on the cotton. The best of the
I situation must be made. If the air is
stirring: then apply more calcium ar
senate dust.
"Remember that it is not essential
that dew be on the cotton to get re
sults from calcium arsenate. It is a
still atmosphere that is to be sought I
rather than dew. Dew and a still at.
mosphere, as every farmer Knows,
usually go together. But a still at-,
mosphere during mid-day is desir.
able if putting calcium arsenate on
at that time will give a twenty-four
hour interval between rains.
"Should a farmer be so unfortu
nate as to have each of his applica
tions of calcium arsenate washed off,
exhausts his supply and can get no
more, we advise gathering squares
carefully at least once a week."
MR. McCALLA OUT OF RACE
Says It is Impossible to Make Race
House of Representative*.
The following letter has. been re
ceived from Mr. M. P. McCalla of
Lowndesville:
Lowndesville, July 19, 1922.
Editor Press and Banner:

it impossible for me to enter the
campaign for the Legislature.
I am indeed very grateful to my
friends who suggested that I make
the race for this very important of.
jfice. I know more about boll weevil

anyway.
It is all a bad dream when our far

ways to less than half a crop under
weevil conditions. If cotton farmers
will commence in time by cleaning
; up farms, later picking squares and
j irning same and using powdered
i calcium arsenate at proper time,
| then at least three fourths of a crop
lis almost certain to be the result.
Very respectfully,
M. P. McCalla.
"LOCAL SHOWERS"
Pedestrians on the 1300 block of
Main street yesterday afternoon a
bout 3:50 o'clock could stand on the
sidewalk and watch wayfarers on the
1200 block of Main street scuttle for
shelter from a hard shower. The rain
stopped at the corner of Main and
Lady with a line almost as sharp as
that made by a hose. On one block
.the rain was coming down in good
.fashion while on the next practically
'none fell. Up in Abbeville county
IW W Pnvin wlin livoc of WillintyfnTi
used to tell of a shower he saw on
^ne occasion when it rained hard on
a spot no larger than a man's hand,
jkerchief; all about the spot the
ground was as dry as the ground a
round the fleece Gideon placed on the
j earthen floor when he was seeking
a sign of victory. While the shower
yesterday was not confined to so
small a spot as a handkerchief, it
'was very limited in extent and at
tracted considerable comment among
those interested in such phenomena.

BASEBALL SIDELINE^.
And old Sal Brownlee and Erwin,
left and right fielders respectively on
the Abbeville team are going to en
jter politics?running for the house of
j representatives. We figured there
was something wrong some time ago
when Sally flew the coop on the um
pire job and took zealously to the
field to make a name for the Abbe
ville team.
Here's luck fellows, but listen,
folks just won't vote for an erring
ball player, no more than for an un
certain umpire. On either score, how
ever, you chaps are safe.?Anderson

The clearance sale of D. Poliakoff
positively will not last longer than
the 29th. Those interested in the ex
ceptional bargains offered should
make their plans accordingly.
