Not only did the Republicans vote solidly for the first time since the bill was called up nine weeks ago, but there was the first real split in the Democratic ranks. (Five roll calls were demanded during the day and all showed about the same results. The first was on the rates of one and a half cents a pound on live cattle weigh ing less than 1,050 pounds and two cents a .pound on such cattle weighing more than that amount and the result was 48 to 15. Sena tors La Follette and Norris (Re publicans), who consistently had opposed duties in the bill, voted with the solid Republican majori- ] ty while Democrats who supported ] the committee amendment were i Ashurst of Arizona, Jones of New Mexico, Kendrick of Wyoming, Pittman of Nevada and Sheppard i of Texas. " " 1 The second rou caix was on cue committee amendment to increase to three and a half cents the two rate proposed by the house on fresh beef and veal. The vote was 47 to 17 with six Democrats voting with the solid Republican majority. Senator Broussard (Democrat) .of Louisiana, who had voted for the committee rates right along anfi who announced that he would vote for the bill on its final passage was the sixth Democrat on this roll call.
