I was done here late Sunday after
noon 'by a terrific wind and rain
storm that lasted for nearly an
hour. A tower on the Constitution
building was struck by lightning
and bricks scattered for many
yards oer the street in front of the
structure.
The force of the wind uprooted
trees in many parts of the city and
scattered limbs across wires,
temporarily paralyzing the tele
phone and lighting services.
Plate glass windows in; several
down town store buildings were
broken while the heavy downpour 1
flooded the basements of Wesley
Memorial Methodist church and a 1
store building causing considerable '
damage. js

Columbia, June 17.?IS. J. Kirby,

Friday morning snortiy alter t>

Leesville on the night of August 7
last.
The trio went to their deaths
singing and praying. Kirby went t(
first. He feigned insanity and tried ^
to get his hands from the straps.
The officers told him he had better

forcibly; the straps were made
tighter than usual, and the current
vas sent through his body, the man
being deprived, because of contrary
behavior, of the privilege of making
i last statement. Gappins went sec
jnd and Fox last the entire proce
dure consuming 40 minutes Fox and
Gappins made last statements in
which they warned young men
igainst bad4company and evil con
iuct.
The penitentiary officials took the
rurious by surprise and staged the
ixecutions at an early hour instead
)f noon, as is usual. This is the first
ime a white man has he en executed
n this state since 1913, and it is the
irst time three men were ever
jlectrocuted in the state the same
lay.
The three men were convicted
Septembr 14, 1921 of the murder of
Wm. Brazell, a young taxi driver of
Columbia. They were first sentenced
a die October 21, but appeals,
tvhich were never perfected caused
postponement of the date and made
resentencing necessary.
The murder which was respited

the night of August 7, 1921. The
trio engaged the young man to take
them to Lexington to "see some
jirls." When they got 15 miles
from Columbia they .blackjacked
the young driver, their aim being to
:ake his car and sell it in Florida,
rhe blackjack broke and they stab
jed him to death to get.away with
;heir plan, according to their con
fessions. They were later arrested
n Augusta and for several days
hey were chased through Georgia
md South Carolina by a mob of
nen bent on punishment.
