REPORTS REACHING MEMPHIS
SAY LEVEES HOLDING AT ALL
POINTS SOUTH OF CAIRO.
THIRD STAGE FORECAST FOR
MISSISSIPPI.
Memphis, April 16.?Heavy rains
in the watersheds of the upper tribu
taries of the Mississippi during the
past 36 hours today caused the Uni
ted States weather ibureau officials
-to issue warnings that a third stage
of high water in the central and
lower reaches of the Mississippi river
must be expected and that the flood
1 J
penoa wouia De proiongea into may
in th? central portions and until the
latter part of. next month in the
lower river.
Reports tonight say thatjbhe levees
at all points south of Cairo ar? hold
ing safely but extra forces of work
men have been set to work repairing
and reinforcing weak points. ,
Reports from all points south of(
St. Louis say the river is rising
slowly and a third rise is now coming
down both the Ohio and Missouri j
with heavy rains reported in the
watersheds of the Cumberland and
Tennessee rivers.
The levee below Hickman, Ky.,
which gave considerable trouble on
the first crests, has been repaired.
Beardsto<wn, 111., April 16.?:
Alarming sanitary problems and an
enormous property damage, in
evitable results of the flood which
continues its grip upon this city was
Beardstown's Easter thought to
night. Fears of immediate damage
are eclipsed by concern over the
future.
Thp wfltftr continued t.n rise and
the current from the Illinois river
menaced building foundations, sever
al of which caved in.
Trains still crept into the city
tihe tracks of the Chicago, Burling
ton and Quincy. The rails are under
water and track walkers preceded
each engine. Existing supplies are
declared to ibe ample.
There are 51,000,000 women and
girls in the United States.
Mrs. P. T. Young and Mrs. W. P.
Long.
We are sorry to report Mr. Ralph
Beauford on the sick list and hope
