Washington, April 8.?During the alendar year 1921 a total of 528 tate and private bahks in the coun ry were closed, according to a tatement issued today by Comptroll r of the Currency Crissinger, sum narizing bank failures for the year, lowever, he added, 163 of these ianks were able to reopen or other wise liquidate their liabilities. The liabilities of the other 365 ianks, he reported, aggregated ap troxiraately $96,000,000 making the tverage per bank $263,000. The Southern geographical division ilr. Crissinger declared, was the most eriously affected in respect to the >umber of bank failures and the vol ime of liabilities, there being 131 ailures with liabilities totalling $27, 100,000 in that section. The calendar year 1921, Mr. Cris inger said, was the third most dis tstrous year with respect to the lumber of failures of national banks; n the history of the national banking | ystem, there being 37 national bank ailures with liabilities of $23,677, 16'.
