THE SPIRIT OF THE LEGION
I am the American Legion, fleeh
and blood of America's fighting
men, soul of those who sleep on
Flander's Field and in the watery
depths of the heaving ocean.
i am the American Legion. I am

rallied to their country's flag when
it was menaced. I cherish and hold
sacred the memories of those stir
ring day9, the valorous deeds and
heroic sacrifices of the men in khaki
and blue.
I am the American Legion. With
ever watchful eyes I care for and
look after the needs and wants of
the maimed and disabled veterans
of the Great War. With tenderness
and mercy I minister to them. With
unrelenting strength and power I
fight in the legislative halls of our
country for their welfare and hap
piness I turn the searchlight of
pittiless publicity on inefficiency and
unfairness toward the former ser
vice man.
T am fhA Amftrican Lwion. I safe
guard those rights and principles
for which our warriors endured a
screaming hell in far-off lands for
which they gave unstintingly of
their warm life of blood. The con
j stitution of our country I uphold
j and will always defend.
I I am the American Legion. I am
strong with the strength of youth
and wise with wisdom of experi
ence. In my ranks are carefree boys
and gray-haired men, millionaires
and paupers, statesmen and humble
folks, ail banded together for a com
mon cause.
I am the American Legion. The
great sturdy organization of veter
ans upon whose far-flung member
ship the sun never sets. My outposts
are established in every land, in
every clime; my banner is unfurled
beside the Stars and Stripes where
ever Americans are gathered.
I am the American Legion.
f!
The following lines by Stafford
King of Minnesota, express the Le
gion's feeling toward the Legion's
Auxiliary:
The American Legion auxiliary is ^
The backbone of the Legion. ' .
The American Legion Auxiliary is I ,
Your wife, your mother, your sister,
your daughter,
Women who have suffered that you
might succeed;
Who know the bitter sweet of sacri
fice;
The sadness of farewell;
The joy of reuniting.
' Women who know the patient happi
ness of service%
A too often unremarked and unre
warded ;
Who bravely sent you forth
Like Spartan mothers of old
to victory or your shroud.
Who wept not lest you be ashamed,
Who waited lonely days for you
I
Or still are waiting
For those who rest where poppies
blow
Or walk the silent valleys of the
deep.
"They also serve who only stand and
wait."
They know and love you and through
you
They know and love the Legion.
You belong to them and they to
you.
Help them now
As they served then?
God bless them!
ADA JONES AND
HER OWN COMPANY
The event of the musical season
will be the appearance at the opera
house on March 14 of Ada Jones,
the best liked and best known come
dienne of the country. You will see
and hear Ada Jones in person and
her own company of high class ar
tists. The success of this American
girl, is as more than one writer
has remarked, a shining proof that
there are native singers who may
never fear European rivalry. Ada
J Jones is today an artist of glorious
: gifts and power, the possessor of a
voice to which few can ever be com
i pared.
:! Knicker suits are the style for girls
these days. A man appeared on the
,! streets of Abbeville last week in
I such a suit and created quite a fol
i lowing. Had it been a girl there is no
] telling what would have followed.
