An Abbeville man wha likes his ei "nip" on cold mornings, is said re- h cently to have made a visit to a *r bootlegger's lair 'in McCormick county. He got what he went for. 11 Then .the enterprising dispenser, at oi $7 per, attempted a coup d'etat, or Q something like that, by trying to T sell his visitor a 20 gallon keg full ( of the snake-bite antidote. He said b he had a good sized lot cached away 01 not far from his house that he would ^ gladly dispose of in more than one P gallon lots. S1 tl Low Water. 31 According to old timers along the a Savannah river, the water in that 11 stream is the lowest they have ever known. The water, ordinarily very muddy, is now almost clear. One man n said that if the dry weather prevail- ^ ed much longer the ferries could be j, dispensed with, as the river could be . forded. He believed he could wade ? g it without wetting his knees. The tj power plants on the river are gener ating only about 50 per cent, ot ^ their normal current. . ~~~~""""" - ^ Ambitious Anderson ^ The Anderson fair officials, in order it is supposed, to enhance the ? ? a I I wen Brothers I; [arble and j? ranite Go. ? Abbeville has a volunteer fire deartment, and a good one. The memers always respond promptly when call is made, no matter at what ersonal sacrifice. When they arrive ley work hard, with the scanty quipment that is provided. Tney ave no uniforms, but fight the fire i whatever clothes they happen to ave on, and since this kind of fightlg, as well as other kinds, is rough n clothes, the volunteer boys freuently ruin a perfectly good suit, here is an ordinance, so it is said or is the story a fable) that memer's of the department shall receive ne dollar for *each fire they help to ght, said dollar to be used to reair damage to clothing. This is a nail enough sum, it would seem, for le service rendered. But the boys ly that they have never been paid nd the city treasurer says they have ot put in claims. Superintendent's Troubles. The lives of the county officials are ot all as rosy as the dawn, as is evienced by an incident that occurred ist week in the office of Superin;ndent of Education Mann. A deleation composed of a quorum of the iree trustees of one school district ailed at Mr. Mann's office and asked :iat he use his supposed authority s superintendent to remove nwm :s trusteeship the third member of be board who was absent. They are eported (not by Mr. Mann) to have iven as reason for requesting such J ction that the member in question ad made a false statement about he teacher of their school. The suerintendent explained that, he had o authority to remove a trustee rom office, but if the complainants rould bring their witnesses a trial ould'be held before the board of Jucation. * j The third member of the board ad, it is said, previously requested " lat the other two members be reloved. F Still Kicking. The Anderson Daily Tribune is ;ill kicking about the "rotten deal" tl says was handed the Anderson Hi h >otball team by refereen "Red" Mc- P [illan upon the occasion of the b tarn's visit here October 14. It says: a "Coach Barton's men apparently E ;el rather good after their string of si ictjories won during the past three a edks when Seneca, Belton, Hastoc n ave been overcome?and Abbeville ti eaten, except the referee?all by a >wering scores. "A return game ^ being negotiat- v i with Abbeville, according to Coach s] arton and will likely come off with- a i the next two or three weeks. If n le game is arranged, as expected, tl le locals are dead sure that they " an acquit themselves with glory and ci jdeem a game lost at ADDeviiie some ?? eeks ago when they appeared to tl ave been the victims of hard luck c nd of playing against the officials." Any unprejudiced person who saw 1< ie game will say that the teams c ere well matched and that Ander- o m was "the victim of luck," the ii reaks of the game going against t< lem, but he would not believe An- e; erson "played against the officials." t< ^ P Judge Banet's Speech. li There has recently been issued si :om the presses of The Press and r< anner a pamphlet containing the P leech of Judge W. Tomorrow is All Saints Day and herefore today is Halloween, this V3 onored day is yet the source of sn iany celebrations and superstitious . eliefs.
