Editor The Times: All along I have

show off. You done both of these
things last week and I'heard three
different people talking about it. One
said he would stop taking the paper
if it happened again. The second man
[ a said he had not been taking the paper
but had been borrowing his
* neighbor's every week and reading
it and that he would not even be
kind enough to you to do that again
if we all agreed that you deserved
the punishment The third man spoke
up and Baid he had been getting the
paper a long time and that he was

his subscription?that he had good
reason now for refusing to ever pay

idea of a country editor using such a
word as "unilateral!" The chances
are you did not know what the word
meant. Of course I knew what you
were driving at,, but that is another
.-matter; people expect me to know
A big words. But don't you get smart
again?it injures your standing in
ythe community and hurts your paper.
Now, but for this friendly adf

would have been spouting out something
about "hebetude." Don't do it;
I found the word first.
RATTLESNAKE FOUND IN ' I
MAIL BOX BY CARRIER
Augusta, Aug. 27.?What local
postoffice authorities describe as the
most dastardly act ever brought to
, their attention was made known here
today when it was announced that
Jos. T. McCorkie, a rural mail carrier
bad discovered a rattlesnake

Augusta. The lid of the mail was fastened
down securely and a red 0ag
was up indicating there was mail in
fthe box. Just as the carrier was
abodt to place his hand in the box
. the Bnake moved his head and was
discovered and killed. The rattler
^ was more than two feet long and
had a half dozen rattles*
Post office inspectors are investigating
the affair, but no arrests have
? been made. McCorkle states that he
is not aware of any enemies on his
route who would attempt his life in
such a manner.

LIGHT AND CLOCK
Snff??ti That Lights Be "WioM*
To Set Cloclu.
The State.
A suggestion has ibeen made bj
"Electrical Merchandising," a maga? ?
J *?j i. 4-1.^
zim; ucvuucu tv uic cicvtiiuai IUUUOry,
that electric lighting companies
everywhere, at a certain hour, "momentarily
wink," giving notice to
the people ofvthe time to set their
watches and clocks and the New
York World calls attention to it and
approves it. .
It would Ibe a simple thing to do
and one thinks of no objection to it.
The telephone companies were compelled
a year or two ago, even in the
smaller cities to suspend their custom
of telling the time to inquirers,
and for many people that was a deprivation
of convenience.
The "wink"' of the lighting company
at nine o'clock or ten o'clock
would not interfere with comfort?
it would last a small fraction of a
second but the head of the family,
who in Columbia, is usually the
mother thereof, would foe on the
lookout for it and set the clock.
