MOFFATT. jc i ! r It has been suggested that Dr.;"* Moffatt should engage in this and; i the other kind of work. Many places' await the coming of a good man. DrTj Moffatt is by all odds the most attrac-> I 1 I- il. - A?T>? ' + f uve yreavner m me ivc- v foraged Presbyterian Church. He is'r a most attractive man. He can be * useful in many places. He has friends a ev*. -ywhere and among all the c churches. These will follow him \ ^ wherever he works. But Dr. Moffatt's greatest useful- 1 nefis lies with the greater affairs of Erskine College. He has given the best years of his life to the college. < He has many more years of usefulness which can be best bestowed on r the institution which furnishes the J very life-blood of the church. Realiz- c ing this the Board of Trustees of the t college has asked htat he reconsider his decision in the matter of taking c op the work which he was asked to c do at the late commencement. !c The title of the new office assign- c ed him and to which he was elected t as popularly considered, may be c misleading. In some quarters it is, 2 we think. Perhaps the name selected ' for his office was unfortunate. But t that the Board of Trustees regard ( Dr. Moffatt as a power of strength s in the affairs of the college no one a with full information will deny. Thelt work which he has done for the col- f lege is not y^t known. Only a few t days ago a good woman in the t church went to her reward. Of her t estate the sum of one thousand dol- t lars is to go to the college. In the next ten or fifteeen years case after s case will be heard from where the b college has been remembered r through the interest and efforts of P the former president. J In seeking to divide the duties of n the former office of president of the i' college between a man who was -to ( TAmoin of +V10 A r\ urnrb C UW Wtib I vvtiv^v Mltu UV nuill -v as an instructor and (disciplinarian ( and Dr. Moffatt, who was elected to s look after the interests of the col- 1 lege in a field where he can be most } useful, it is most unfortunate that j an idea became prevalent that the t trustees of the college sought to t shelve Dr. Moffatt. S, If there has been any doubt as to j 1 the sincerity of the board in open-jc ing a greater field of usefulness for j t the most loved minister in the j<i church it should be dispelled by the i action of the board at Chester last 1 Monday when resolutions were pass- Jk ed urging him to reconsider thel' work which he is said to do. and ! when a delegation of the board was 1 asked to Wait on him personally .and 1 urge him to become the redl dirfec- 1 tor of the destiny of" Erskine 1; '! Itg. '* ' '.I While the good people of the 1 church are praying for the guidingh hand of the Master in the selection j* of a president of the college to lookj] after the affairs of the institution at 1 home; they may well pray also that the Master may acquaint Dr. Moffatt ' with the minds and intentions of the 1 board of trustees of the college who are bent on giving to the small de- ] nomination, which is so great a de- j nomination, a man of broad vision ; and proved accomplishments for the! up-building of the institution. Now is not the time to consider, acts, which may have been niieun-1 derstood, as affecting any of us personally. It belongs to Bmall men to :onsider matters from a personaJ standpoint. Dr. Moffatt is not that rind of a man. We hope and believe ,hat he will see the work of vital necessity to the college which he is railed on to do, and that on maturer ronsideration, he will lead in that vork. Up in the first presbytery of the A. it. P. Church they are thinking of rying the new boll weevil remedy on in editor or two. tVe had rather that Dempsey and jJeorges Carpentier do the fighting :or the whole country in this spell >f weather than that we stand i chance to be called on to do t for the eniertainmer.t of this com-! nunity. . j ' * The reason that Corp. Kerr was elected for the short term as trusee yesterday was because he de? iired to have the short term so that le may run again next year. He ikes to keep before the public. THE ECHO "The Really Musical Spot in Abberill*." , ERSKINE PRESIDENT TO BE NAMED LATER The Board of Trustees of Erskine Collge met at Chester Monday evening, June 27th, to consider the report of the Executive Commitee of the Board on the names of men suggested for president of the college. Eighteen members of the board were present. The committee made its report to the effect' that four names had been suggested to it for president, stating that such data as the committe had been able to collect had been collected, and was at the disposal of the board. After consideration, it was decided to defer the elect'on of a president of the college until August 3rd, when there is to be a meeting at Gastonia, N. C\, when further action wiil be taken. Th:s decision was reached for several reasons, chief among them the fact that seven members of the board residing in the ( West reported their inability to attend the meeting in Chester. Several members desired further time for1 consideration. A resolution was unanimously nnecp-i* pxnressinfr the reer?t of t.hp hoard that Dr. Moffatt has declined j j the work outlined for him at the;! last meeting of the board, empha-|; sizing the great need of a man to do!; this work, expressing confidence inj; the ability of Dr. Moffatt to prose-j; cute the work in a more satisfactory ! manner than any other man in the Synod, and strongly targing him. to reoonsider the matter. What Dr. Moffatt's decision in the j matter will be has not been madejj known by him and cannot be forecast jj but his friends in and out of thejj church, and especially those vitally I interested in the college, will hope' that he may find himself in position to join forces with the board in making the college take on new life and a career of greater usefulness. / 2 " [ Honesty may be st&mped on a. man's face and yet leave a very wide margin. j When You l a I THE I An | AG B v I AU | Silver, ' ? i. v, ?; | Austin-Pe A CORRECTION In our notice of the hospitals "birthday" celebration which will take place on the 6th of July, our readers were led to infer that the celeforation would be an all day affair.
