Lewis, of Belton, has been the guest of his daughter, Mrs. E. W. Harper, Jr. ^ Our town was very sad to learn of Mr. Albert Henry's death, he was favorably knowi\ and well liked by our people. Mrs. Ella Nance has returned from a month's visit in Abbeville. She is with her niece, Mrs. W. W. Thompson. 'Much sympathy is being expressed for Mrs. D. L. Barnes, who is suffer ing from a carbunkle on her left hand. Mrs. Barnes, 4s a dear sweet woman, who always ministers to the sick and afflicted in her kind, gentle way and every body is*grieved to have her suffer. Mss Lena Hall,of Iva, who has a music class here, spent several days in town this week. Mrs. E. P. Vandiver and Miss Etoile Watson, of Anderson, have been guests of their uncle, Mr. Bolen Allen. Mr. Allen is able to be on the streets again with the aid of his stick and crutch. Mr. H. G. Bone of "Red Top Farm," Messrs. Fred Crowther and EtiMne Patterson. of Antreville. were recent business visitors on our. streets. Miss Fannie Ficquette after a week's visit to her family, has re turned to Columbia where she holds a responsible- position in the Post Office. Miss Fannie is a bright, suc cessful young lady and 'her many friends are justly proud of her. Mrs. Jas. McAllister has returned from the Anderson Hospital, where she has been taking treatment for the past month. Through private intelligence it is learned that Mr. W. Mark Speer, who is taking treatment in a Macon hospital, is not improvng as was hoped. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Speer in his affliction. Mrs. T. D. Cooley has returned from Winthrop College. She speaks in glowing terms of the Pageant and regards it as one of the greatest privileges of a lifetime to have wit nessed the great educational play. Mrs. Theron Allen and her little folks are visitng her parents, Capt. and Mrs. E. W. Harner. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dean and Mrs. W. T. Dean, of Dean, have been the guests of Mrs. A. V. Barnes. Mrs. H. C. Fennell had a severe fall a few days since, besides a con siderable shock, she sustained a bad ly sprained ankle. Misses Sara and Eloise Hardin have closed their school at Barnes and have returned home for the summer. Mr. J. B. Huckabee has purchased a brand new horse. He and Mrs. Huckabee are enjoying their drives in the handsomest turn-out that is seen on our streets. Prof, and Mrs Harper were spend the-day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jno. McCalla of "Oakdale Farm" a few days since. Mrs. Luther Pettigrew, of Barnes, has been visitng at the home of her brother, Dr. Hutchison. She brought her pretty little daughter, Caroline, for her first visit. Much interest was shown the little girl on her appear ance among her parent's friends. The conference determined tc make it a matter of law rather than of discretion on the part of govern ors of the federal reserve board thai the farmer should have the right oi discounting his paper for 12 months, the entire planting season, rather than six months as the law provides; and the maximum rate of interest to be charged by federal reserve banks should be set by law. A subcommittee was appointed with Senator Smith of South Caro lina, as chairman, to prepare an amendment to the federal reserve act, embodying the foregoing prin ciple. The conference also agreed to make a study of the railroad situa tion, and take immediate steps for the alleviation of the burden occa sioned by exorbitant freight rates. It was the understanding of the con ferees that in all matters, Southern ers and Westerners could control the ocuaiic* As to the rate of interest to be charged by the federal reserve banks the conferees did not agree. FATHER SUCCUMBS DURING INQUEST Columbia,May 11.?Edmund Rob erts, of Lakeland, father of Rufus Roberts, 14 year old boy who was killed Sunday when the cap of an ai tdllery projectile, with which he was playng exploded, died Mondaj mornng while the inquest over his son was bedng held. As a result both inquests were conducted simulta neously a verdict to the effect that death of both parties was acci dental was returned. Rufus Roberts and his fathei were seated on a bench in the yard of their home Saturday and the boj was playing with the cap of an ar tillery projectile, with killing him al most instantly and injuring his father to such an extent that he died about 10:30 o'clock yesterdaj morning. His time was 7:53 4-5. The time of Campbell for the first half mile was L54. Tom Campbell left Anderson several years ago, and was at Chicago university for a while where he made a splendid record in running, and was one of the American representatives in the Olympic races, although very young.
