I * Washington, Feb. 17.?Prepara tions are under way by the \Treasury, Secretary La Porte said today, to launch the proposed $18,000,000 hospitalization expansion program for the benefit of disabled war vete rans immediately the funds are made available by congress. Proceeding on the plan now before the Senate for adoption, Mr. Laporte . explained; the Treasury is making readv for the expansion of 15 exist ing hospitals and the erection of five new plants in order that the work can start on short notice. They expect their membership to be less in the new house. Representative Claud Kitchin of North Carolina, will be Democratic leader in the next House succeeding Representative Champ Clark, of Mis souri, who retires in March. He is also the ranking minority member on the ways and means cojnmittee. I MWMUM M CONVERSION OF ALICE A Plea Through a Story for Contri butions for the Suffering Chil dren of Stricken Europe "America cannot fail!" said Dr. Lewis as he finished his address on Near East Relief, at one of New York's fashionable boarding schools. All the time he had talked, Alice Kennedy had had great difficulty in keeping her mind from wandering to more pleasant things. * She was very glad when he hdd reached the closing sentence. With a sigh, she rose and remark ed to the girl next her, "Oh, what a boring evening this lias been, and think of the play we missed, just' to hear this lecture! "^hose children are nothing to me and furthermore, I do not believe they arq that Sad off; they simply put up a pitiful tale to get the^noney.'" Light-hearted Alice wasted no ! more of her thoughts upffn the stray ing children of Europe. She had enough to think of, already. Did she not have to plan how she would' spend her Christmas holidays at home? In her plans she thought first of her own enjoyment, as $he always put her own desires first. Soon she found herself ^>n the train bound for home. Tired, after the day's excitement she leaned back and soon went to sleep. V It was not long before she arrived at her home, only to find no orie there, not a sign of human life was about. In her distress she looked uf to see an old man, looking very weary, approaching her. Going up to him, she asked, "Can you tell me where my people and everybody are?' With a sigh, he replied, "Why have you not heard of their fate? They and everyone have died for lack of food. It will not be long before every American will suffer their fate. No one will help us." Alter (rays QI ceaseieaa wauucuu^ | she decided to walk to a home of some Americans, just outside of the city. "I know they will help me, for WE helped them," she said. When she had reached, the home., she waited only a few minutes before a woman opened the door, ^lice, tired and hungry, told her whjfc she' had come and asked her help. "You did not help usj but left my people ttf die, so why should I help you?" With a derisive laugh, she closed the door. With a'cry, Alice 4woke to find the porter calling out her hometown Looking rather dazed, she rose and walked out the car, to find her fam ily awaiting her. After this dream Alice's belief concerning the Armenians was quite changed. She had seen what the suf fering of those starving children 1 n 1 ?? 1 rl Aim C9 meant, one spent nei uunuajo uumB relief worfc, and through her efforts, a great sum was appropriated: i She felt much happiet after having helped some, and in her heart, she said, "America will not fail." :?Annie Wilson, 11th Grade.
