KIDNAPPED WOMAN FOUND A PRISONER ON SHEEP RANCH 9 Arrests Are Made In The Los Ange les Case Following Clever Work of a Telephone Operator Los Angeles, Califv Feb. 1.?Mrs. Gladys Withrell, who disappeared from her home here Jast Tuesday, was found early today, a prisoner in a small house on as heep ranch eight miles east of Corona, in Riverside county about 70 miles southeast of Los Anegeles according to telephone messages to the Associated Press. Mrs. Witherell was unharmed. Two men who gave their names as A. J. and Floyd Carr, cousins, were arrested. j The discovery of Mrs. Witherell ont.Vip arrests were effected by Los Angeles police and deputy sheriffs, who started for Los Angeles with the woman and the two arrested men. j The officers said the Carr's con fessed they had ill feeling toward the woman's father-in-law. A. J. j Witherell, because of a transaction involving a boat, and that they kid- j napped Mrs. Witherell, both to ob-[ tain revenge and ransom money, of f which it was said, they had demand-! ed $20,000. A telephone operator's quick wit-! tedness led to the discovery of Mrs. Witherell and the Carr's arrest. The j operator received a call from a pay station for the residence of 0. S. Witherell and delayed making the i call until the police had been sent to ! the pay station, where they ar-j rested A. J. Carr just as he was concluding a delayed conversation' 1 -which he had promised relatives in a ' i letter sent them Saturday. The indications are that it will not be held until the night before the j convening of the congress in extra : ordinary session. I Representative Kitchin, minority leader, declares that postponement is i necessary in order that animosity de ; velc-ped because of the split over the i emergency tariff bill might be dis sinated. At the same time, bv the datie of the caucus, all of the North 1 ern Democrats who stood for the protectie tariff, or "peanut" tariff, , will have retired. Southern Demo crats as a rule voted against the bill, and in the caucus, they will be in a majority. As previously reported, Mr. Kitch in created a storm when he declared that none of the Democrats who sup ported the tariff measure should be made new members of the ways and means committee. He threatenel to carry a fight to the floor, if that ex igency be proved to be necessary, to prevent the election to the commit tee of either Representative Jones of Virginia, or Representative Steagall of Alabama. This challenge greatly disturbed Representative Garner of Texas, who, on account of the illness J of Mr. Kitchin, aspired to minority leadership. In case counsel for both sides agree, which seems certain now, the case will not be reargued and an opinion may be handed down in the | next few weeks. The Gossett oase is remembered by the public as invoving alleged crim inal assault upon a yuong white girl at Abbeville by Kenneth Gossett of Honea Path. Gossett is now in the penitentiary under a 40 year sentence for the crime. His case has'been be fore the supreme court for several months, being argued last October.? The State, Feb. 1st.
