State Hospital?Recommend
Additional Room For
Negro Patient*
Columbia, Jan. 18.?Report of its
annual inspection of the State Hos
pital is made public today by the
State Board of Public Welfare, fol
lowing its inspection of the institu
tion recently.
The report states that it cost the
State Hospital 86 5-8 cents to care
for a patient per day last year. The
per capita cost to the state of each
patient for the enire year 1920 was
$316.91.
The reports refer to the recrea
tional features of the hospital man
agement, athletic sports, dances,
moving pictures, concerts, checkers,
a brass band and baseball. The "pa
tients are also given useful occupa
tion, and about 35 per cent of them
are restored socially, through the
occupation and recreation. There
are religious services every Sunday
in which the superintendent, Dr. C.
F. Williams, takes an interested
part.
The new plant of the Hospital is
nearing completion, the renovation
of the Taylor building to be finish
ed soon. The group of new and re
newed buildings will afford suit
able provision for patients of both
sexes, as "attractive in appearance
and efficient in arrangement as a
congregate institution could reason
ably expect to be."
The report says that the one
building that does not yet come up
to high expectations is the Thomp
son building, for negro inmates.
The board recommends that more
professional help be employed at the
hospital. There are now 16 nurses
and 153 attendants, in care of the
2180 mentally diseased patients.
The hospital has in recent years
found it difficult to get nurses and
attendants.
The board also recommends more
adequate and comfortable quarters
for the negro patients. "Shockingly
inadequate" are the negro quarters
at the hospital and also at the State
Park, says the report.
The report of the board also sug
gests that the state provide a ward
at the state hospital for psycho
paths. It re fers to psychopaths as a

ALL ABOUT DYSON
CAPT. W. C
have been intending, since my
lal visit to the old home during
Christmas time, to write a little
jthing about Dyson. And I want
all the attention of the railroad
nissioners to this place. Super
ldent Henry Williams in his day
ne time undertook to joke me
it the place as a health resort.
, I am not so sure about that be
exactly correct as to the place
e the railroad station stands,
use it is right on the creek and
the river, but a little way back
the station is one of the most
;hy sections of South Carolina,
the water is fine.
