THE BAPTIST MEETING COMES TO CLOSE i ! I Services Conducted By Rev. Mr.' Bailey Well Attended?Forty New Members?Good Music The meetings conducted by the' Rev. B. B. Bailey and Mr. W. P. Martin in the Baptist church will come to a close tomorrow night. The series of services have attracted great crowds of people, who have 'listened to the preaching and the' singing with rapt attention. More than forty members . have been re-1 ceived into the church, two-thirds of them through baptism and the oth ers by letter. There will be services tonight, Thursday moAiing and Thursday night, and Doctor Bailey and Mr. Martin expect to leave the city Friday for Florida, where they are to begin a meeting next Sunday. Splendid Preaching On all sides have been heard the j most enthusiastic comments upon the preaching of Doctor Bailey. This f * has been especially noticed among members of, denominations other than the Baptist. His preaching has been singularly free from appeals to the emotional element in man, but he has presented the Christian theme of the crucifixion of Christ for the sins of men in a manner y> appeal to everyone who has heard him. Doctor Bailey has made a deep impression upon the citizenry of Abbeville, and will be long remem bered as a profound scholar and lovable Christian gentleman. Music of High Order The -music during the series of meetings has been under the direc tion of Mr. W. P. Martin, of Lynch burg, Va. Mr. Martin has proved himself to be a master of assembly music. Mr. Martin has trained the chil dren well, and they were In full charge of the singing Monday night. He chose to call the children the "boosters," and right well did they "boost" the services. It is Mr. Mar tin's purpose to take the members of the "booster choir" on a picnic, or "hike" Thursday afternoon. Miss Ruth Howie has presided at the pipe organ, and l\frs. Otto Bris tow at the piano during the meet ings. COOPER SUBMITS BUDGET TOTALLING OVER $7,000,000 Columbia, Jan. 18.?A state bud get totaling seven million one hun dred and eleven thousand, six hun dred and eighty-eight dollars was submitted to the Legislature today by Governor Cooper. The 1921 bud get is thus an irfcrease over the total appropriations of last year of almost an even million dollars. The printed budget report also shows the re source availaible for the state this year, these totalling more than eleven million dollars. If the legis lature approves no more than the budget calls for a reduction of the tax levy is predicted.
