MONEY FOR STARVING
CHILDREN OF EUROPE
, The schools of the county are
veTy generous in their response to
the call of the American Relief
Commission for aid in helping feed
the millions of starving children in
the near-east. While reports have
not b?en received from many of the
schools as yet, it is believed that
quite a number have taken the mat
ter up and will report direct to the
commission or to the secretary of
the Abbeville Chamber of Com
merce, who is directing .the sub
! scriptions in Abbeville rCounty.?
The Abbeville High School has
! contributed the sum of $86.79 and
I the Abbeville Graded School has,
! flip sum of $66.29. mak-l
jing a total of $153.08 for the city
schools.
This money has been turned over
to Mr. Barnes, secretary of the
Chamber of Commerce, together
with $19.60 received frpm the Due
West school. This school has pre
viously sent forward a Christmas of
fering of $67.50 making a total of
$87.10 for the Due West school.
The Associate Reformed church
of Due West has also forwarded
over six hundred dollars for this
worthy cause to the Literary Di
! ge-st.
ENOUGH PENSIONS ALREADY
Washington, Jan. 8.?The Rev.
Henry N. Coden, the blind chaplain
of the House of RepresShtatives, was
reetired today after more than twen
tv Years' continuous service.
The House unanimously voted him
! an allowance of $125 a month for
life, and made him chaplajn emeritus
of the House of Representatives.

There does not seem to be a dis
position on the part of the "washer
women" of the city to require the
head of the house/ to bring out the
clothes on Monday and to come for
them on Saturday as was the s^yle
last year, but many women can be
seen walking the streets on Monday
