HARD TRAVELING
FOR TARIFF BILL
Senate Decide* on Committee Hear
ings?Near Defeat Once
Washington, Jan. 4.?Stumbling
blocks which the Fordney emergen
cy tariff measure has encountered
since reaching the senate continued
today to rise up in its pathway. The
chief of these appeared in the de
cision of the senate finance com
mittee in stormy executive session
to hold hearings on the measure.
Advocates of the tariff measure
believed and opponents hoped the
committee's action would mean the
death of the bill. Senator Smoot,
Republican, Utah, was understood
to have told the committee the move
would cause the bill either to be
killed in conference or filibustered
to death on the senate floor." The
projected hearings will begin
Thursday and continue until next
Tuesday and will be followed also
by decision of the committee, by
hearings, on the soldier compensa
tion bill.
The finance committee meeting
today was the first over which Sen
ator Penrose, its chairman, had
presided in more than 13 months. An
age, although she 1s eighty-three,
she often walks across town to
spend the afternoon with friends
and enjoys the walk as well as .the
company.

attempt by Senator Simmons, Dem

j action indefinitely on the tariff bill j
developed the first clash. The mo-j
tion lost, however, by two Demo-1
cratic senators, Nugent of Idaho
and Jones of New Mexico, joining
the Republicans.
The question of holding open
hearings, committee members re
ported, brought on a second vote
and exchanges in which sharp words j
' were used. The motion to open the |
hearings was made by Senator Ger-i

! was given the support of all the
Democratic members in addition to j
| Chairman Penrose, who was joined
by another Republican, Calder, of j
1 New York.
Senator Penrose after the meet
j ing issued a statement in which he

j clined, however, to offer a predic

never would become law.
