w of Probate Judge Walter M.-Scott
who was killed in an automobile ac
cident last Sunday, tonight announc
ed that she will accept the offiee of
probate judge to fill the two years
?f her late husband's unexpired term
if elected by the people at the spe
cial election to be called by the gov
ernor. Mrs. Scott was assistant to her
husband during the six years he serv
ed as judge of probate, and her
friepds contend that'she is well qual
ified for the place. If elected, it is
believed that she will be the ' first
woman county official in South Car
olina.
Mr? Scott, who was slightly in
jured in the accident which cost herlj
husband his life, said tonight that if I
chosen by the people, she would ac
cept the office chiefly as a token of
esteem for her husband. Her decla
ration came after much pressure had

Motor Company's Highland park
plant which closed for the customary
ten day inventory period, December
24, probably will not resume opera
tions until February 3, or later, it
was learned here today.
No statement was obtainable at the
executive offices of the company,
where it was said announcement of
the shutdown had not been officially
authorized.
Approximately 50,000* _ workers
were employed^n the Highland Park
plant when it closed for inventory.

Makes Recommendations
Columbia, Dec. 30.?Insurance
paid by South Carolinians in 1919
for which year State Insurance
Commissioner McSwain has just is
sued his report, totaled more than
twenty-one million dollars, which
was nearly five million in excess of
the premiums written in 1918.
Life insurance premiums totaled
for the one year $13,015,103, which
was an incease of $2,549,641 over
1918 life premiums. Fire insurance
premimums totaled $7, 121,338.
Premiums on mi^pellaneous insur
ance totaled .f1,503,760, an increase
over i?io 01 xne wwu in
crease for the year being $4,683,
536. The total insurance premiums
paid in . the state last year was $21,
640,202.
The income of the insurance de
partment, paid into the state treas
ury, for 1919 totaled $418,337, an
increase for the year of $115,743.

to require individual insurers to re
port to the commissioner any trans
action with unlicenses insurance
companies, and to pay a fee of four
per cent on the premium, in addition
to the one-tenth of one per cent of
losses adjusted. The idea is to pre
vent the operations of "outlaw/in
surance companies/'
Legislation to require insurance
companies whose licenses have not
been renewed, to- report semi-an
nually the amount of renewal pre
miums collectedly companies trans
acting business in the state.
Legislation to put the supervison
of investment companies under the
attorney general.
Legislation to make the license
fee of all insurance companies of
other states of countries three hun
dred dollars each.
.A law to require all schools and
colleges to devote a small amount of
time each week to instruction in
fire and accident prevention.

sage that the boy was thojight to be
dying and he was dead before the
doctor arrived.
