Established 1844. Til3 PRESS AND BANNER ABBEVILLE, S. C. ' i'he Press and Banner Company Published Tri-Weekly Monday, Wednesday and Friday. ; Telephone No. 10. Entered as second ,?ass matter a: post office in Aoheville, S. C. MONDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1910 ' One Year Six months _ Three months $2.00 $1.00 .50 HAVE YOU BOUGHT YOUR SHARE OF SEALS? Have you bought your share of Tuberculosis Christmas Seals? Abbeville Coynty has been asked for $400.00 in this campaign, so far only $94.34 has been taken in from the sale of seals. I A committee of ladies have been at work canvassing, but it has been impossible to secure canvassers ' for every part of the county. It is hoped that those who have failed to secure j these seals will do so THIS week, so i that Abbeville County will not fail 1 in doing her part. These seals will be found on sale at Speed's, Austin-Perrin's and Mc-j Murray's. I NOT BUYING A THING Col. Sam j. Wakefield,\ of Antre ville, who was a real estate king, but j who is now somewhat deposed, was; in the city today. He said the Press and Banner had the biggest fool edi torial sometime ago he had ever read, except he didn't say biggest." He used instead a more emphatic word,! which we do not mention. We asked him to what editorial he referred, I ; when he replied, "Why, hell, that edi torial telling people to buy." "I | i haven't bought anything and I am' not going to buy anytmng," ne ae clared with more than Baptist em-j phasis. "If I did I would pay it with j somebody's else money." and I want. to keep out of jail." , j i ( REVENUE GETS IN WORK j] Interna] Revenue has been giving'^ most people a good deal of trouble ^ the past week, but it was a tame af- ( fair as compared with Will Reve nue. Will got into a fuss with Will j Daugherty, on the Taggart place, near Calhoun Falls, Saturday after- ( 'noon, and when the smoke of battle ' had cleared away, Daugherty found * himself in a precarious condition, f <- - -1?11 i : one siae 01 ms skuii nuvnig ueeu crushed by a stick in the hands of his assailant. i The injured man was brought to * the County Hospital and yesterday an operation was performed by Drs. Rakestraw and Neuffer. A large piece of the skull bone was removed and the negro was found to be in a j very serious condition. Little hope I of his recovery is held out by the' ^ physicians. . ] MONEY OR LIQUOR ( Dr. W. E. Link, of Willington, ar- ] V rived in the city today. We^ saw him j ,on Cotton Row talking to a few|, down-trodden farmers like ' his son, I ( Bishop R. S. Link, Uncle Jim Stark [ and Col. Frank W. Wilson, of! Watts. He was verv much surmised.! 1 he said, to see the people up this way in such good humor. -"Why I was down at McCormick the otherj. day and every man I saw looked like j, he had the blues," the doctor said,; | 4 "none of them would smile, but up^ here everybody is smiling (and Jen- j ] ner Link)." "You people up here', must have more money than the! ] McCormick people, he i explained,!, "or is it liquor?" MAN S CONSCIENCE HURTS Philadelphia, Dec. 19.?A troubled j ?~ ~ ~ 1 j iL. i i-viiMJiuiice uuuay resuiceu in me senu-; ing of a typewritten anonymous note ' to the receiver of taxes with $2,250! in cash. "For back personal taxes-' improperly made out, due the city and . State" the note read. This is the equivalent of taxes at four mills on an excess of $5,000 of personal preperty. | No conscience has ever before been < so troubled as to pay that amount owed the city without the prospects 1 of detention. STEALS THEIR BEAUTY Everybody else is getting robbed, so why not the photographer? Thus reasoned someone Friday night when they opened the show case of Col. F. S. Hays at the corner of Main and the Public Square and took out five photographs which were on display for advertising pur poses. The photos were in hand some frames and no doubt the thief was after the frames rather than af ter the pictures of the pretty girls. Hereafter if the photographer will lay up his advertisements in the Press and Banner we will promise to fix /them where thieves do not break through"and steal. LAWYER CL1NKSCALES I Lawyer Clinkscales, who has been I at the County Hospital since swal-l lowing his false teeth last week, j walked away Saturday and is now1 at home as usual. The teeth have: not yet been gotten rid of but so far they are not worrying the lawyer any, and until they do he will not bother himself anymore about them. There is not much to eat now I anyway, and the lawyer thinks he can get along with the teeth he has; left. WATER ALL RIGHT Charleston, S. AN APPEAL FOR HELP TO SAVE STARVING CHILDREN In the past few days their has ap peared in hundreds of our newspa pers an appeal to the people of the Uniaed States not to forget, in their Christmas joy, the condition of 3, 500,000 children who are dying of starvation in eastern and Central Europe. . The movement *to food and care for these children is undertaken by every Humanitarian Organization in this Country and is being direct ed by Mr. Herbert Hoover. t* I jCiVeryune is cApeuicu lu, anu nu i doubt will, do their part in reliev ing this terrible conidtion. It is estimated that ten dollars will care for one of these unfortu nate 'babies until the next harvest is reaped. It is therefore absolutely necessary that we raise $33,000, 000,000, for this most Christian un dertaking. Each and every State City, Town and Distritt is expected to do . its part?Through this article we re specfully request every Minister of the Gospel, every School Te^fcher, every Banker, every Business/every Farmer, and in fact everyone in Ab beville County to consider themsel ves committees to aid in the work of raising our County's share in this splendid undertaking. We are sure the Ministers will at once devise some means of having their congregations become active in this work and it would be well for all to follow their lead. Let us forget our troubles and see how much we can do to help others foi^et theirs. All contributions should be for warded to the Abbeville County Chamber of Commerce, Abbeville, S. C.
