I ^ I SOME GASOLINE PUMPS I HAVE BEEN FOUND SHORT | Columbia, Aug. 18.?A number | of gasoline measuring pumps have * been found short in various parts of the state in recent weeks, according to reports made by the weights and n easures inspectors of the department of agriculture. A statement issv.ed by the department today I ecvers the findings of the inspectors | uii two tours made last week. Abbeville, Newberry, Laurens, I "Clinton and Chester were visited by the inspectors last week on the tour. | Thirty-sever gasoline pumps were E inspected. One was condemned at I Abbeville, one at Newberry, and F one at Chester. Eleven were adjustf ed, as follows: Newberry 2, Laurens 1, Clinton 6 and Chester 2. The pump:. adjusted were found to be short from four cubic inches to one ? and a half pints. Pumps found impossible of adjustment and therefore condemned were found to be short from 1 1-2 pints to one quart. J. . Another tour in the work of ma. specting gasoline measuring de K? vices was* made by Inspector KenjL nerly. He visited Orangeburg, DenT mark, Blackville, Bamburg, Williston and Aiken. There were 17 requiring adjustment, seven of these at Orangeburg, three at Denmark, * two at Blackville, one at Bamberg, three at Williston and one at Aiken. The pumps condemnation by Mr. Kennerly were found to be short as mu,ch, in some cases, as three pints in five gallons. Pumps adjusted were short as much as one and a r half pints before being adjusted. The department of agriculture's statement says that there are . 231 cubic inches in a gallon, so - that a loss of fifteen or twenty cubic inches in a gallon of "gas" would mean the better part of a mile lost to the automobilist. I PARENI5 Utl>iLu SON'S CUSTODY Spartanburg; S. C., Aug. 20.? Vr Clarence Edward Watkins, 6 years of age, was awarded to the custody of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Sherman of Valdosta, Ga., in habeas corpus proceedings before Judge Thomas S. Sease here. Charles L. Watkins of Columbia, S. C., entered suit against his former wife, Mrs. Arthur P. Rose of New Orleans, and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Sherman to obtain possession of their child. Mr, and Mrs. Watkins separated in May, 1917. In 1918, Mrs. Watkins filed a bill of divorce in Valdosta and obtained the decree in the fall oi 1919. Mrs.- J. W. Sherman took charge of the Watkins child. Judge Sease required bond oi Mr. and Mrs. Sherman in the sum oi $1,000 as guarantee that the chilc would not be turned over by them to the custody of its father oi mother, but would be kept as theii own. Both father and mother, how> ever, are at liberty to visit the chilc at any time, but not at the sam( time. The hearing brought out a humar interest story scarcely paralleled, ir fiction. Letters Mrs. Watkins hac written her husband after theii separation, were read in court, play ing up the lights and shadows oi their private life. These letters counsel declared, showed Mrs. Wat kins loved her husband, thougl IS YOUR HEAL GRADU Interesting Experience of a Teza Women Knew About Car Much Sickne Navasota, Texas.?Mrs. W. M.
