and even cool daytime weather.
The week of July 25-31 has already
inflicted great damage upon the
cotton crop as compared to more
favorable condition previous to that i
period. Cotton must get its maturity
in stalk during the summer
- months and one day fhen is equal fo
four days in the fall to bring its
n normal growth to the fruitage j

Dayton, Ohio, Aug. 4.?A fighting
message to Democrats and Re
publicans was given by uovernor |
Cox, the former's presidential |
nominee, in an address today at a
local Democratic picnic.
Speaking from a roped arena for
boxing events on the picnic program,
Governor Cox, avoiding definite
issues, declared he would
carry the offensive in "a considerable
fight" for which he predicted
success. Incidentally he promised
that his address next Saturday acepting
the Democratic presidential
standaard could be understood
'even by school chillren."
"Boys, I'm ready for the fight,"
he declared to the cheering plaudits
of several hundred members of the
Gem City Democratic club of this
city.
"We need make no defense," the
governor continued. "Ours will be
the offensive fight from the beginning
to the end, and it will be a considerable
fight. Make no mistake
about that. I have the faith in me
that there will be triumph of right
principles this fall, which will
sarve notice to Republican leaders
for years to come. I was about to
say that it would be a Democratic
triumph. It will not be that.lt will
not be a victory in the partisan
sense. It will be a triumph of the
rights."
Turning upon his opponents, the
governor continued:
"We've won before in the same
kind of a fight. We'll win again because
we're right.
"The opposition has been good to

CAMP GORDON WILL
BE ABANDONED BY
THE WAR DEPARTMENT
Washington, Aug. 7.?Instructions
have been given the general commanding
the southeastern department
to abandon and sarvage Camp
Gordon, Ga., the war department an-j
nounced today. The fifth division,
now stationed at Camp Gordon, has
been ordered transferred to Camp
Jackson, S. C.
The movement of the division will
be made in such detachments and at
such intervals as will interfere least
with railroad operations but should
be completed before cold weather
sets in, the announcement said.
