Cumming today urged communities throughout the country, and especially along the coast, to inaugurate rat-extermination and ratproofing campaigns. "Bubonic plague is primarily a disease of rodents, especially rats" said General Cumming, "and the disease can be controlled effectively by measures directed against the rat. The extermination of rats is all more to be desirel because of the tremendous economic damage they cause." According to conservative estimates made by the U. S. Public Health Service on the basis of numerous surveys, there is at least one rat for every person in the United States. This estimate coincides with 1.1 X n- i. T> !!.. ?? J T ^ 1 uuu> ior ureal r>riutm una lremna, and with authoritative figures for Denmark, France and German^. The annual up-keep per rodent was computed by the same authorities as $1.80 in Great Britain, $1.20 in Denmark, and $1.00 in France. The depredations of the rats in the Inited States will very probably exceed the estimate for Great Britain. Onehalf a cent a day is considered conservative, but even on this computation, it costs the United States $180,000,000 a year to support its rat population. This does not in:lude mice. "The U. S. Public Realth Service s prepared to Retail trained experts io assist communities in organizing he fight aaginst rats," said General Cumming. "Many of our officers lave had extensive practical experiince in this work, and know how to nake it really effective.
