News from Anderson today
brought the information that C. N.'
Thornton, of this place, tried in the 1
Federal Court for violation of the '
Marin White Slave Act, was found
not fruilty. !
An unusual case was heard this i
morning in the federal court, un-'
Usual for the fact that Mrs. Forrest i
Householder, a very pretty young
woman, appeared as one of the j
principal witnesses for the govern-,'
ment in the case against her father, I
C. N. Thornton, charged with the!
violation of the Mann White Slave 1

act.
The case was a complex and unusual
one, and a brief resume of
the testimony offered by witnesses
for the government showed in part
that C. N. Thornton had taken a j
young white woman to Comer, Ga.,'
by automobile, going from Abbeville,
S. C. The government charged
he had done so for immoral pur- 1
poses.
Mrs. Lanura Porterfield, of
Comer, Ga., testified that she was
operating the hotel at Comer, and j

in the case had come to her hotel'
and stayed there three days and
nights, passing as man and wife.
She declared that they occupied the
same room and that there was but
one Bed in the room.
. Mrs. Forrest Householder, daughter
of Mr. Thornton, testified that
she had heard talk of improper relations
between her father and the
woman in the case, and that she
knew they had had immoral relations
for a period of several years.
She testified that she had heard
? that they had gone to Comer, Ga.,
together and that she went there j
and caused their arrest.
Maggie Norrell, testified that!
Thornton had taken her to Comer,!
Ga., and that he had come oacK i
about a month later, they going to j
the hotel and living there for three,
days as man and wife. She testified j
that she had been having improper!
relations with 'i^oraton since she
was 17 years old, (about 5 years
ago), and that she did not know he
was married until fater. She testified
that he promised to take her
to Georgia, and thai he would get a
divorce and marry her. She testiv

On last Friday evening the gradu- G
ating class of the Due West High D
school gave .a pageant, assisted by E
the school. It was put down on the M
program as: "Mother Nature's May K
ay Festival." Every pupil in the j M
school had some part in the play. It!
took two hours to go through with j M
th exercises. It was given in Ers-|
kine Auditorium. A very large audi- j C
ence was present. It was compiled
and directed by Miss Frances Wide- H
man, the prinicipal of the school,
assisted by Misses Wardlaw, Ed-!
wards, Addison, Scoggins and Mrs. j
Mamie Pressly, the teachers. Mrs. j

It had evidently taken much time h
and patience and thought on the
