The blaze of light that hurt his
eyes was not remarkable, for of
course the sunlight poured across the
desert far as the eye could reach.
Curious to see these distant scenes
brought so intimately near. Travel
was no more the rich man's monopoly,
for here right before his eyes
the wonderful, magical East had
been caught; and certainly no traveler
could find the authentic glare
of the desert hurt his eyes more than
this dazzling, aching, shifting sheet
of whiteness that now danced before
his sight.

corner palms lifted their crowns against
the sky, exactly as he had imagined
that they would, lean and
lanky, with pointed fingers like
graceful signposts, and a dark maze
of underwood tangled about their
feet. Queer world! Why did they
not make signposts like that?
A Lion In the Desert.
What was that coming out of the
oasis? (Was it an oasis? Did oases
have underwood?) A lion, to be sure.
It bounded out from the underwood
and came rushing down upon the
audience with queer splayed fore
feet that sometimes seemed larger
than the head above them as they
threw up the sand of the desert with
each magnificent bound that the
beast gave. What a speed! It was
uncomfortable the extraordinary way
in which that horrible beast came
right down toward him, the dirty,
tangled shock of a mane rising and
falling, thrown back by the swiftness
of his course, that unbelievable

the sky, and the sand thrown
up behind in dark shadows that fell
into the lengthening track. He felt
his hair stir upon his head. There
was a choked feeling about his
throat, and he lifted his hand to his
neck. What would happen when it
reached the edge of the desert? He
half rose in his chair. Another couple
of bounds.
God! he was out and upon hin< In
a twinkling the audience had fl*4,
and ho was alone in that dark theatre,
as the lion sprang up the distance toward
him. He stumbled up the steps
ol' the passageway, his feet sinking in
the thick pile of the carpet and holding
him back. He looked round for
tl;e attendant. but no attendant was
there. He was alone. Behind him he
could feel the fearful weight of the
