THIS FEBRUARY TO
HAVE FIVE SUNDAYS
As this is a leap year, the month of
February contains twenty-nine days.
As the month begins on Sunday, i
there are five Sundays. While about a J

Sundays, it is an uncommon thing^
for February to have five. Since there j
are exactly four weeks in February
in ordinary years, there can be five,
Sundays in a month hi leap year on-1
ly, and then only when the first day[
of the month falls on Sunday. Since I
the f.rst day of the month can fall,
upon any one of the seven days of
the week and since leap years are
usually four years apart, it will be
seven times four, or twenty-eight j
years, between the years in which
tVere are five .Sundays in February.'
The year 1900, however, being a <
century year, not exactly divisible by.
400, was not a leap year. For this^
reason the interval has been longer, j
Eighteen hundred and eighty was the|
last time when February contained
five Sundays. Thus persons under'
forty years of age have not seen a
February with five Sundays and per- j
sons under sixty-eight have seen but
one. In the future the event will

occur regularly at twenty-eight-year
intervals until 2088, after which the
century years 2100 again extends the
interval to forty years. The year
2000 is a leap year.
It is an interesting fact that when
February has five Sundays more legal
holidays fall upon Sunday than in
any other year. Some holidays, such
as Thanksgiving Day and Labor Day,
cannot fall on Sunday. Those which
can are New Year's Day, Memorial
Day, Independence Day, Columbus
Day, and Christmas. Three of these
Washinton's Birthday, Memorial Day
and Independence Day, fall upon
Sunday this year. There is no weekday
holiday from Lincoln's Birthday
until Labor Day. This is sad news
for those who desire such days. As
it has not happened so for forty
years and will not not for twentyiight
more, this year's shortcomings
had best be overlooked. There are
no other years with three Sunday
holidays, but there are several cases
in which no holidays fall upon Sunday.
This happens when an ordinary
year begins on either Monday or
Tuesday and in leap years which begin
on Monday, Wednesday or Saturday.
From what has been written, it can

book we could use them in order, be-'
ginning again at the beginning when
the end was reached. As it requires
'.00 years to include all of the retirements
of the leap-year rule, to
have calendars in order for all time
under the present rules we would expect
to require seven times 400, or.
2,800 pages, one for each calendar.'
lit happens, however, that 400 years'
| consists of exactly 20,871 weeks, and
hence each interval of 400 years be-j
gins on the same weekday. Hence the
calendars repeat themselves in just
the same order after 400 years, no(
matter how long we use them.
Rather simple rules can be given j
for determining upon what day of the
week the year begins and whether it
is a common or a leap year. Such;
rules, together with some mechanical j
device for shifting the days of the |
week on a calendar with respect to.J
the days of the month to correspond
with the year, constitute what some,
call a perpetual calendar. A number,
of such devices have been made, but
j they have not had great popularity.
For the first time for several
j months we shall now have some of
' the brighter planets as evening stars.
Jupiter is an evening star after February
2 and Saturn after February
27. Those \\fiio desire to see the
f2int illumination of the sky called
the zodiacal lierht should look for it
at. this time of the year, when it is in'

the early evening here. A new mov-'

although its appearance is practically

Two new temporary stars were also 1
