Hertz 1 trown, a delegate from Spartanburg, ' iroviding for a memorial hospital i ommemorative of those South Caro- 1 nians in the service of the nation ^ rho made the supreme sacrifice in ' he world war, instead of the memrial chapel provided for by an act f the General Assembly. Subsequently another resolution ndorsing a non- utilitarian building r monument fcs a fitting memorial ras adopted by the convention. The hospital resolution asked the Jeneral Assembly to make the necssary amendment in the existing law. o that the utilitarian building intead of the memorial chapel b$ milt. The resolution said that the tuilding, if the General Assembly pas favorably disposed toward the dea "shall be a great memorial tospital where suffering may be Te ieved, disease eradicated and the itizens of this State made more fit ? J or her service." Act of General Assembly.- The ast session, of the General Assembly ntssed "Ore act providing for the e?,'< action of the memorial chapel on the , pround owned by the University of !outh Carolina. The measure carried m appropriation of $100,000 with the itipulation that it was to be augmentid by public subscription from among he citizens of the State. It Is a crelied commission, of which Governor 3otrper is chairman, and ex-Governor' (fanning is; vice-chairman, to carry ?n the campaign and provide for the nemorial. The commission decided hat the people of the State would be tsked to contribute $400,000. Almost from the first meeting of he Commission, opposition to the dea of a non-utilitarian building was ixpressed. Both Republicans and Demo- t crats claim they are ready to respond 3 to the demand of the country for a final vote this month, but every ef- I fort to bring about an agreement to ' set a date for a vote has failed be- 1 cause, as a matter of fact, the spirit]] of compromise not yet has been recognized as absolutely necessary by ! extremists, who think they yet can j defeat the whole treaty. ? .' .
