THE CITY PARK. \ The City Park and zoo has mucl to commend it to the people here, es pecially the grounds about the wate works. But there is a feature tha offends and offends sorely. And tha is, the cages, in which the poor ani mals are penned. These cages ar< filthy and smell, smell to such an ex tent that visitors are driven away It is had enough that the squirrel and bunnies and guinea pigs and pig eons should be caged in, but tha they should have pens that give fortl a foul stench is unpardonable. Thos< in authority should take action am obviate conditions there. v A BRIDGE ACROSS THE SAVAN NAH. A correspondent sends in the fol , lowing exchange from an August? paper anent a bridge across the Sav annah River. This should be of in terest to readers in this county. W< are given to understand that a bridg< is badly needed near Calhoun Falls. "An urgent need is bridges acros: the Savannah river from Savannah t< the mountains," said Mr. H. C. Mid dleton today. / "I want to suggest a practical waj to get them," he added. "Let th< two South Carolina townships anc .Georgia military districts adjoining the proposed bridge locations get au the states to issue bonds , H bulid these bridges a9 toll bridges ''the toll will pay the interest or the bonds; gradually pay the con struction cost and give the district: and townships a good annual sum t< spend on their own highways. The townships and districts would b( really underwriting the bridge bonds and no taxation would be necessarj to care for the bonds, if good loca tions, at important crossings, were selected. "The day of the highway is coming back; there is going to be a large traffic over main highways and well placed bridges over streams like the Savannah will pay; they will be toll gates across the roads, costing a certain sum each, I know of a country loll bridge (distant from any citv) rot rwo hundred miles from which yields the owner a net ,inco:nc of $15,000 to $18,000 a year 021 a $30,000 investment, ^nade before the late war. * ^T.AfllnnM imA 1 1 . J ucoyuig vut me twu uria^ei ui Augusta, I understand there is not ? bridge across the river between Sa vannah and Anderson, except one op posite the latter city." THE NAUGHTY WIFE. The "Naughty Wife," which showet in the Opera House Friday night wai somewhat disappointing. First, i f a o 4-*?n aa Aaucu uu u^tciu^ a. nave vjx. iiaugiitx ness. There was not a risque line o a "too" suggestive scene?some wen disappointed. Again, it was a play of no plot depending almost entirely upon deli cate nuances for effect, and it wa extremely difficult to put the hig parts over with an audience that re fused to be quiet, but persisted i: the barter of neighborly gossi throughout the show. Then there wa the feature of the boys, young boy and boys not so young, who talkec played, giggled, whistled, indulged i catcalls and threw spitballs an otherwise conducted themselves in manner unbecoming any part of an crowd that is permitted to take seal - at a theatre, where most people pa good money for the actors to do ALL j? the talking and equally good money for SILENCE from their fellow theatre-goers. It is rather hard on the actors to - force them to compete with the audience in putting their lines across and it was 50-50 as whether the actors j - or the audience were the most audi- j Ible. | | It also might be stressed that the people who attend shows here might | make an extra effort to arrive before ! ! the curtain rises on the first act. It j j would save a great deal of confusion, ( : unnecessary noise, baleful glares and * | would help the caste in their intro-, ", ductory lines. In other words, would i go far towards making a show such' as the "Naughty Wife" a success in- \ 01 stead of a stale performance. The j 0 point?you've caught it by this time 1 q!?is that the theatre-goers and not | the performers were to blame if the | "Naughty Wife" appeared insipid as | shown here. ' - I I Red Cross. I. This year the lovable news. paper comic will be seen in a brand, i new comedy in three acts, providing! i for the introduction of all the favor-1 ite and never-to-be .forgotten' char- j s acters in the world-famous George j ) McManus cartoons on which the piece i . is based. This time 'Tather' will be placed through all the involuntary ethics of breaking into the I charmed circle of the upper classes, ' so to speak, and as his million of admirers are aware, totally against his will and ambition. The~"vicissitudes ithat befall his reluctant pilgrimage through a nightmare of "pink" teas, soirees and other social orgies forms the nucleus of one of the merriest comedies of the year. A characteristic Gus Hill production is assured along with a cast of thirty people including a chorus composed of sixteen of the prettiest and withal most talented young women ever mustered in one aggregation.
