desville High School opened last Monday
with an enrollment of 142. Mr.
L. C. Griffin, Ninety Six, principal,
Mrs. Gamewell Huckabee, Mrs. J. B.
Huckabee and Miss Elizabeth Bell
constitute the personnel of the
teachers. A large number of friends
and patrons were present for the
opening exercises, which were held

and school sang America, after
which Mr. Griffin in a few appropriate
remarks introduced the following
gentlemen, who made short enthusiastic
talks. Rev. J. A. Clotfelter,
Eev. H. G. White and Dr. J. B. Moseley.
Mr. Griffin comes to us highly recommended
as a student and young
man of strong character and thorough
educatipn, being a Carolina
graduate. The other teachers have
taught here for several years and are
too well known to require comment.

Quite an interesting horse auction
was held at Dr. Kirkpatrick's stables
on last Monday und6r the manage
ment of Mr. Jerry McKenzie of Honea
Path. Twenty-six young ranch
1 horses fresh from the plains of South
Dakota were sold, averaging about
$85 per head. An unusually large
crowd was present and the bidding
was brisk and full of "pep."
Messrs. Will Broadwell and Will
Kennedy have purchased a large public
service truck and are prepared to

several trips to Hartwell last week

Wofford College, where he was a stu
dent when he volunteered for nava
service during the war. He will enter
the Junior class and his friendt
are predicting a bright future for the
handsome young student.
Rev. J. A. Clotfelter was called tc
Anderson last Thursday to officiate
at the marriage of Mr. H. G. Darricotte
and Mrs. Goodman. Mr. Darricotte
lived at the Frank's place foi
several years and has many friendi
who will be glad to hear of his marriage.
I >r. Jas. L. Ellis, who has bee a en
gaged in the drug business in Atlanta
for sometime, has bought the stock
of the Calhoun Falls Drug Co., and
will open business at that place on
Oct. 15th, under the firm name oi
Ellis Drug Co.
Our sick people are all improving.
Mrs. Mary Miller Bell is able to walls
with the aid of crutches. Mrs. Cora
Hawthorne Huckabee is able to be up
most of the time. Mr. Ray Clinkscales
will return from the hospital
this week. Mrs. E. W. Harper, Sr.,
has so far recovered as to leave the
hospital and go to the home of hei
daughter, "Mrs. Theron Allen, where
she will recuperate for a few dajft
before returning to her home.
Mr. John Henry Wilson has giver
up his work at Parksville . and has
accepted a position with Mr. Charles
L. Bowen.
Mr. T. D. Cooley has gone to At
lanta on business.
Mr. J. B. Huckabee, after a shori
visit to Orangeburg, has returned.
Friends of Mr. Wendall Latimei
will be glad to know that he has recovered
to such an extent as to b<
able to return from Asheville in e
short time.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Latimer, with
their son, Marshall of Anderson
spent the week-end with Mrs. R. L
Smith.
Mr. Geo. P. Brownlee, after ?a visit
of several weeks to relatives, has returned
to his home at Whigham, Ga.
Friends of Mrs. Cora Holland
Brownlee, widow of the late Capt.
Jno. Brownlee, are grieved to know
of her continued illness at her home
near Antreville. Mrs. Brownlee, foi
many years has been a wonderful
factor for the uplift of the industrial,
social and spiritual life of her
community and people throughout
the county are hoping that she may
be restored to her wonted health very
soon. . \
