FARMING METHODS
ADVANCE TWENTY
YEARS DURING WAF
During the past two'years the me
thods of production and conservatior
employed by the farmers of thi<
country have advanced 20 years be
yond what they would have been during
peace times, says G. I. Christie
Assistant Secretary of Agriculture
Prior to 1914 and even up to the de
claration of war by the United Stat?
there were farmers in every com
munity who were not interested ir
county agents, farmers' institutes
the agricultural colleges, or the Un
ited States Department of Agricul
ture. But when war was declare<
i and Uncle Sam asked the farmers t<
grow more foodstuffs of every kind
those who had before assumed an at
titude of indifference responded t<
the call. Throughout the Natioi
[these farmers, with a spirit of patri
otism and an additional inducement
of fair prices and assurance of rea
sonable compensation for their ex
penditures, called upon the Federa
department and other agencies tha'
could give them information. The at
titude as well as tne spirit or tn<
farmers changed from peace-time t<
war-time farming.
