CAMPING AND CAMPERS.
This is the season of camps and
campers.
There is something delightfullyj
primitive in the soul of man that re-1
sponds with eager enthusiasm to thej
call of the big out-of-doors.. There;
comes a time when all of us would!
like to slough off some of the effete!
civilization that is bred by furnace-!
heated homes and electric ranges,
soft beds and servant-prepared foodj
and meet life where it is a little |
more real, less buttressed by con-1
ventions and hot biscuits for break-'
fast.
To be sure there are some who are
so softened by the debilitating influences
of civilization as to prefer the
so-called summer resorts, wnere nature
is served a la carte. Instead of
couch; instead of khaki and boots!
the canvas cot there is the cano*pied!
are crepe de chine and French slip-1
pers. Such as these can never hope
to reach the land of promise, of i
poetry, and of placid stillnesses; the'
land of romance, that lurks in the
woods, beneath the cliffs and in shadows.
There are many places to camp
and many varieties of camps. $ut
the true camp is essentially simple, I
with a tent or a cabin for shelter, aj
few cooking utensils and clothing,
the most useful and serviceable.
There should be no impedimenta that
can be dispensed with.
And of places to camp it is hard
to say whether forest-clad mountains
or the river valleys are most en-|
trancing. But we believe the mountains
are more satisfying. There is
something uplifting, elemental, irresistible,
all conquering in the mountains.
On the other hand there arei

the rivers that run swiitiy tnrougn;
the meadowed pastures, where cat-|
tie graze, the banks fringed with'
willows and nature peaceful in the ,
soft sunshine of summer. |(
Then there is hiking, and fishing,!
and bathing, and boating, the hun-1
dred and one activities that spell life!
in the open. It's a life for action?'
living in the true sense. There are'
no frills to it, but it brings strength:
and peace of "soul. Try it just once

is, if your fibres, mentally, morally i
^ > and physically are not hopelessly
degenerated by the enervating action
of conventional life.

Commission announces open compe-^
% titive examinations for fche positions,
of assistant in cotton testing, grades
1 and 2, for men only, on July 1,'
1919. Vacancies in the Bureau of
Markets, Department of Agriculture,
Washington, D. C., at entrance salaries
ranging from $1,800 to $2,400
for assistant in cotton testing (GradeI
1), and from $1,200 to $1,800 a year
for assistant in cotton'testing (Grade;
2), will be filled from these examina-j
tions.

handsome Library Building at 3:30
o'clock Tuesday, June'17th. A considerable
majority of the Board,
both Synodical, and Local were present.

from the President, Dr. L. Ross
Lynn, at the close of his first years
services as President. A resolution
of approval and commendation of his*
work was unanimously adopted. He

Harold and Cecil Tate, Claude
Jambrell, Webbie Barksdale and
Donald Harris went to Spartanburg
ast week, where they joined the
3oy Scouts of Spartanburg on a two
veeks camp in the mountains neay
L,ake Toxaway, N. C. This camp is
:onducted by G. E. Simmons of
Spartanburg, an uncle of Harold and
Uecil Tate. About one hundred boys
enrolled for the camp this year.
