CARLOAD OF HOGS
FROM M'CORMICK.
Farmers Show Big Meat Production
' Record?Better Cows Coining?

Call of Demonstration Agent
for Better Methods.
McCormick, Feb. 19.?During the
past year the farmers of McCormick
County, in response to the call of the
government for increased production
of meat, have in many cases produced
more meat than they were able
to consume at home, and the local
markets are not able to handle this
over production. In view of these
facts, County Agent N. G. Thomas!
Las been devoting some time to get-|
ting up a cooperative shipment of.
these hogs, and at the present time^
has arranged with a nearby packing;
plant to buy one car load of these
hogs. The hogs are to be assembled ;
at McCormick, February 22, where |
^hey will be weighed, graded and paid
for on the spot by a buyer represent-J
ing the packing plant. The price will
be the market price and according to
the grade of the animals.
This is an opportunity that the
farmers of MfeCormick County have
never had before, and every farmer!
who has one or more hogs that is in j
slaughtering condition should take
advantage of the opportunity to market
their surplus hogs. An assured
market for hogs will enable every
farmer in McCormick County to cut:
the cotton acreage at least one-third!
and still grow a crop that is easily <
produced, and with the farmers' co-!
peration with the packing plants
that are within our reach, can also be!
readily marketed.
The C. & W. C. Railroad is putting
forth every effort to develop new enterprises
along the road. The railroad j
las an agricultural field agent who!
represents the railroad in this work,j
Just about ten days ago this agent, V i
L. Collier, had a conference with Mr. j
Thomas relative to the shipment of j1
the hogs from this county, and of recent
date Mr. Thomas has received a'
letter from Mr. Collier, which ex-]1
plains how the railroad is cooperating '
with the farmers in any new enterprises.
During the past week, County
Agent Thomas, assisted by Special
Agent H. T. Converse, completed the '
organization of the farmers of the;
Bordeaux section for the purpose of
improving the milk cpws of that sec-:'
tion. Twenty-five farmers in this
section authorized Mr. Thomas to j
purchase for them one pure bred
Jersey bull. Mr. Thomas wants to
get two or more communities to;
purchase pure bred bulls cooperative-j.
ly. If this is done, each community j
will purchase one-third interest in'
each bull, and each bull will remain j
in one community two years out of^
six years.
The banks of the county are ready 1
and willing to cooperate in every wayj 1
with the farmers of this county forj1
the betterment of the live stock con- j <
ditions. The banks by cooperating 1
with the boys of the county, have '
painted McCormick County red with11
Duroc pigs from sows purchased last,1
spring. Reports that are now in the *
hands of Mr. Thomas, show that during
the past 12 months these sows '
have reared from eight to 22 pigs, all 1
of which were pure bred. Quite a J
number of these pigs were sold in !
different sections of the State for
breeding purposes while those that
failed to conform to type went to the i
pork barrel. At the present time Mr. i
'Thomas has an order from a county
in the lower part of the State for 30
well developed gilts that are from
eight to ten weeks old. He expects
to fill this o^der from pigs that are
of this age and are in the hands of
the boys. A buyer will visit Mr.
Thomas during this week for the
purpose of selecting these pigs.

of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Klugh, cele-!
brated his birthday last Saturday by |
inviting his little friends to a party.:
Many handsome valentines were eriv-:
en the young man and a most pleas-'
ant time was enjoyed.

RELIEF FUND FOR STARVING
PEOPLES IN NEAR EAST
Abbeville County Will Do Her Share
In Feeding the Hungry, Clothing
the Naked, and Ministering to
the Sick.
In the near East there are literally
millions of people, Armenians, Syrians,
Persians, Greeks and Jews
without home or shelter, without
food, clothing, and to add to theii
pitiful condition disease has become
widespread.
For the relief or these people America
is to send $30,000,000. This
fund will be used to relieve the pangs
of hunger, to give medicine to the
sick, to secure some clothing for the
naked, and to purchase seed for
planting that these people may help
themselves after the next harvest
season.
Every city and community must do
its share if the fund is to be raised
and the most necessary necessaries
are provided. Abbeville County is
asked to raise not less than $2,000.00
for this purpose. The Campaign will
be conducted through the various
churches in the county during the
week of February 23?March 2nd.
Each church and church community
is expected to do its share in this relief
work. It is proposed after the
campaign to publish the names of the
various churches, the number of
communicants, the pro rata share of
that church, and the amount raised
by that church. Fuller information
will appear in next week's edition of
this paper. Announcements will be
made in all the churches having services
next Sunday by the pastor and
Sunday School Superintendents.
M. R. Plaxco, Co. Chairman.
BIG REAL ESTATE CONCERN.
The Dixie Land Company carries a
page advertisement in this issue announcing
to the public that it will
open an office in Abbeville at once
to do a real estate business. Mr. G.
Allen Banks was in the city a- few
days ago on business for his company
and while here investigated thik territory
looking to the opening of this
office.
Mr. Banks is a wide-awake real
estate man, and his company emdIovs
men who know how to sell real
estate. Lands in this ' county may
be bought at very attractive figures
at present, and we look to see somebody
make money by buying up
some of the more desirable of these
lands at prevailing prices. The advance
is sure to come. The Dixie
Land Company will no doubt be in
;he running when it comes to securing
bargains along this line.
THE NEW FORD MAN.
Mr. E. F. Arnold, the new Ford
nan, has rented the corner storeroom
of Rosenberg & Visanska, in

:hanges in it preparatory to opening
lis show room for Ford cars. The
store room is one of the 'best appointed
in the city for an automobile
show room, and Mr. Arnold is fortunate
to be able to secure it.
He is looking every day for a carload
of Ford cars which are on the
way ,and when they arrive he will be
able to put the people to riding
again, even if we do not have good
roads, because the Ford "rambles
ight along," you know.
Mr. Arnold expects to do a good
business in this county, and will be
pleased to have the riding public call
on him at his new place of business
in order that he may make their acquaintance,
and show them the Ford
way.

Mrs. Gulledge and Mrs. Elbert
White went over to Atlanta Thursday
and will look into the ways and

the Trainmen.

This news will interest all aspirants
