COL. ROCHE HUNGRY.
Col. P. A. Roche was up on Greenville
street again Sunday night visiting
his friends. Col. Roche likes
to go to town and he knows when he
is in town. He called to see his old
friend, Mr. R. L. Mabry, who has
been sick with the "flu" for about a
week. Whether or not Mr. Mabry
gave him a dose of his "flu medicine"
which acted as an appetizer,
we do not know, but when we saw
the Colonel he was evidently hungry.
He was looking for a cook, he
said, "white or black, male or female,
and no questions asked about
the price."
He told us also that Judge J. S.
Hammond, of our section of the city
is about to work himself to death
during the cold weather. He is so
anxious for work that he has taken
a job out in the country. He was
unable to take a job which Col.
Roche wishes done, and the latter
then applied to Carpenter Enlow, of
Wilson Hill, but found that he hqd
a job in McCormick County. But
after the Colonel had told him of the
langers of catching the "flu" down
in McCormick County, "so far away
from home" he finally persuaded
Enlow to help him out of ^ii/^ffi>
caltiee.

SECRETARY BAKER ADVOCATES
TEMPORARY VOLUNTEER
ARMY OF 500,000 MEN
Washington, Jan. 4.?Secretary of
War Baker has advocated a temporary
volunteer army of 500,000 men
to facilitate the quick discharge of
men who have already seen duty.
A bill to authorize the organization
of this army will soon be submitted
to Congress, Baker told the
House Military Committee. The ari^y,
he explained, would be of a temporary
nature and designed to hasten
the demobilization of the present
forces.
Eaker told the committee that the
war department would not ask Congre?s
for any permanent reorganization
of the army until after the
poace treaty is ratified. < Thus far
the department has arrived at no decision
regarding universal military
training he said.
