It was well attended and an interesting program was carried out. ~ T> * *" A1?U?wia Mrs. 5. f. ivioore U1 mauaiuo, uiiu Miss Cora Holland of Spartanburg, made inspiring and instructive addresses each session on different" phases of the work. Hon. M. F. Ansel, president of the State Convention, was present Sunday morning j>nd addressed a large audience. A report of the year's work was given by Mr. J. M. Nickles, the county president, was good and showed that the organization is growing. A long table was arranged under the shade trees in Mrs. E. W. Harper's front yard, which is just across the from the church, and dinner S'-r c<". there both days. Lowndesville en joyed having the convention and the people in oui community will no doubt become more interested in tha work our county is doing to promote the grert movement. V < \ vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv Mt. Carmel, July 31.?On last < Friday afternoon quite a severe wind 1 rain and hail storm passed over Mt. 1 Carmel and the nearby country. The -' wind was the heaviest I have known < and just above Mt. Carmel on Miss Susie Patterson's farm the hail was ' very destructive, some crops were 1 almost totally destroyed. The dam- < age to fruit trees and crops was considerable. < Messrs. T. E. Rivers of Greenwood, 1 and H. M. McCain and Harper, of ] McCormick, were business visitors in Mt. Carmel last Monday. Dr. Swope will be away about ten days^ MINUTES OF THE DIRECTORS OF THE ABBEVILLE DISTRICT BIBLE SOCIETY The Directors held their annual meeting in the Baptist church on July 25th, 1917. Present: Revd's. F. Y. Pressly, H. W. Pratt, H. B. Blakeley, J. B. Hillhouse, Messrs. R. S. Galloway, Amos B. Morse, Hugh Wilson, J. N. Dendy, L. P. Harkness, Drs. J. I. McCain and C. H. McMurray, Mr. W. D. Morrah. Opened with prayer. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. Rev. H. Waddell Pratt and Mrs. John E. Brownlee were recommended for electio^i as life members to the society. It was moved and ordered that a meeting of the board of directors be held every year early in May, the day to be appointed by the president and secretary. On motion the secretary was requested to furnish a copy of the minutes annually to the city papers, s soon after the meetings as pocsii-le, with the request that they publish same. Mr. John G. Hemminger's name was dropped from the list of directors according to the constitution, not having attended a meeting in three years and Mr. Albert Gibert was elected to fill the vacancy thus created. Dr. F. Y. Pressly was appointed to address a letter to the churches in V DUE WEST. V Due West, July 30.?For a number of days during the dry spell, the Due West people held a series of prayer meetings. They developed to be one of the sweetest series of meetings ever held in this community. The blessings asked for were more largely spiritual than temporal. When the rain came two meetings of thanks giving were held. The Due West Bible society met last Wednesday night, Dr. R. L. Robinson in the chair. The annual address was made by Dr. G. G. Parkinson. The funds on hand were ordered turned over to the Abbeville society. A eood large delegation was chosen to attend the Abbeville meeting next. On last Monday afternoon, Mrs. Mary Whitesides Scoggins of this place, fell asleep after an illness of months. Mrs. Scoggins has been a ?reat sufferer the last years of her life. She leaves a devoted husband ind nine children. The funeral took place in Due West, Rev. J. P. Press[y conducting the exercises. Mr. James Bonner and Mr. Robert Brownlee left on Wednesday for Greenwood to join the Coast Artil-j ery. A great deal of interest and *ood wishes follow all of our boys as they leave us. , Miss Mary Kennedy left on Mon3ay morning for a canvass for Wonan's College in the lower part of the state. Oglethorpe, Ga., reached Due West Fri3ay and left Monday. Mrs. Janie Young Harper and :hildren of Oak Hill, Ala., are spending a part of the summer with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Young, j A Red Cross Society has been or-; ?anized in Due West. The first meet-j ing takes place this Tuesday evening in the Memorial Hall at the Woman's Colleger THE CIVIC CLUB CANNING. The canning to be done by the Civic Club is well under way and on Tuesday of every week will be demoted to the entreprise. The can ,?;ii TVf Will UG UUX1C 111 l/UC U1U w L iUIO. W. P. Greene. Mrs. Dickson, who has offered her services, will be ready every Tuesday morning at nine o'clock and persons having work to do will please send their vegetables and fruits as early as possible. The club has on hand one hundred three pound cans which they will sell at five dollars and fifty cents for the hundred or seventy-five cents a dozen. The work for canning will be sixty cents a dozen. The club has also the two pound cans which they will sent at 4 a hundred or 50 cents a dozen. The work of canning will be 50 cents a dozen. Anyone who has not bought cans from the club ami wishes to have can ning done can have the work done at six and a half cents a can, which is Mrs. Dickson's regular price. CANNING FOR THE CLUB. The canning for the Civic Club was begun last Tuesday morning and hereafter will go on every Tuesday morning at the home of Mrs. W. P. Greene. A very excellent days work was done Tuesday in the way of canning tomatoes and okra. All those who have bought cans are requested to get their work done. Both vegetables and fruits are plentiful and the club hopes that much that would be otherwise thrown away will be saved. each and every community in the I i t i???i 1 county, in wmcn mere is ?u iut?i , Bible Society, asking and urging that ! at their earliest convenience they take up a special collection to pur- | chase and give bibles or testaments to our soldier boys. The American Bible Society, of which we are a part are doing a great work in this line but they need funds with which to prosecute the work.
