Mr. Kerr, wearing the gown of office, be Lie in the chair. The chair called the meeting to order and stated that behe fore he would allow the roll called, s= ay the minutes of the last meeting i read, or recognize any member of J 1 the faculty, he had a statement to I n" read, which he intended to read and f I would read, and that he demanded Z J _ the strictest attention of the mem-, I bers of the facutly on pain of not [ 1 t being recognized in the meeting at ] all. The statement read by the Pres- I i ident is as follows: |[ Members of the Faculty, Gentle- * J men and Sirs:?A gross insult has ] been flung in the face of this college, | one which as the head of the college,^ ] wearing the gown of office, I feel J ] that I should take notice of and call | . to your attention. [ J Ever since this college was organ- 2 1 Ilized we have been flooded with ap- I 'plications from students who wished f to enter our institution. I determin ed in the beginning that I would keep I the standard of this college above [ any other like institution in the ? country, and for that reason in the,? very beginning I made such friends as I fWill Barnwell, Bob Mabry and Her- t bert Allen mad by not allowing them to enter above the prep, department. ft _ I was more than glad that Professors r g Roche and Sondley of the Roche Fit- 5 gg ting School, did not apply for en- ft 5 trance because I would not have | I liked to hurt their feelings, but ? I! knowing my duty I should have cut ft ? them down as not being properly V J | versed in the little card lead to en- ] jj ter the Freshman Nclass. 1 ! if But this college has been willing to V j I help all students who desired to | j enter and I have sent out my pro- | J _ fessors whenever occasion arose to 5 ] g deliver lectures to students and to I m teach them some of the principles of f J H the game in order that they might ] II enter later. The boys up on Main ft i street who have always had a hanker- [ J ing after society, but unable to get - \ in on the top round, have been per- j sistent in asking me for a professor ft I to give them lessons, and I have | ] been more than courteous to them in ? j doing so. As stated in last week's ft Press and Banner some of them were V J making progress in the game. After ? ] hearing a report on Doctor Neuffer I from one of the professors, and also T J hearing that he would give a party ] on Thursday night, I made up my 1 mind that he was about ready to en- [ ; ter, and I was thinking of dealing , kindly with him. J But just here is where the insult ft ; comes in to this college. Of course v , as the head of the leading institution 1 it was nothing more than senatorial ft | courtesy that I should be invited to f . the supper. Besides, it is the proper j 1 thing on all such occasions to have ft ! a man of leading on the subject pre- [ i sent to referee any dispute which | may arise as to a proper play or lead. I ! It was due you, my good friends and [ fellow workers, thai. I should be ih ? J the game. I reasoned all this out to 1 i myself, and Tuesday night I had ( reached the conclusion that I would * | certainly be invited, but although I sat up a little late no invitation | came. I inquired around on Wed- | ] nesday however and found several J j other gentlemen who had not been ft invited so I concluded that the in- I vitation will be sent to me on Wed- S nesday night. ft So on Wednesday night I was | ready again to be invited. As it was the first, meetine of the season I in which players appeared in public. I thought it would be well to go > home early and be in a proper state of mind to receive the invitation, so I went into the President's office by 6 o'clock and took my seat, and appeared to be scanning the contents Catarrh Cannot Be Cured with LOCAL APPLICATIONS. a?J they cannot reach the scat of the disease.
