ABBEVILLE COUNTY TEACHERS ASSOCIATION The second meeting of the Abbeville County Teachers Association was held in the court house Saturday, the 25th of November. In addition to the present enroll ment, about twenty teachers names ^ were added, making an enrollment for this year to date about fifty members. The meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. J. L. Daniel of the Methodist church. After the prayer Mr. Daniel gave the teachers a splendid talk containing some wholesome advice. He stated that teaching ranked on a par with preaching, in fact, the teacher's opportunity for doing good was equal to that of the preacher. This should mean a great deal to the conscientious teacher. Miss Sara Evans of the Lebanon school lead the discussion on the ''Teaching of Reading." This subject was freely discussed by Miss Allen, Miss Epting, and Miss Brooks of the city schools, Miss Williams of the Antreville school, and Miss Kennedy of the Due West school. This discussion brought out many good points and showed that the teachers are thinking along modern methods of teaching. After matters pertaining to the profession were discussed, a business meeting was entered into. Miss Sara Evans of the Lebanon school, was elected first vice-president nad Miss Mary Rudisail of the Rock Spring school, was elected second vice-president and Mr. W. L. Latimer, Principal of the LowndesJj' . ville school, was added to the Executive Committee. This committee makes up the program, fixes the ' time and place of the meetings and passes on all matters not provided in the constitution of the association. The association decided to hold Field D&y some time during April, 1917. It was deidced to ask each to place ou exhibit work done by pupils in the school. This gives the schools all time to get up a good exhibit. After matters pertaining ''to the Field Day program will be 'decided later. The officers of the association are: President, J. P. Tyson, Supt. Due West school, Due West, S. C.; Secretary, R. B. Cheatham, Supt City Schools, Abbeville, S. C. .The officers with W. L. Trustees should see to it that the teacher who is indifferent to this phase of her work should become active. A profession is just what the membership make it. One who is teaching and has not that professional spirit? should not be in the school room, for evidently her work to her is a mere "job." It simply means to "hear" lessons, go to the boarding place and forget her pupils, draw the check at the end of the month and then her "work" is done. With that kind of teaching and professional spirit it would be better for the pupil if her work had never begun. An unusually strong program is now being made up for the meeting in January. Every teacher in the county is urged to be present that day nad enroll with the association.
