THRSHAME Or ABBEVILLE. Qraenrille New*) ^ i When the news came that certain persons in Abbevile had in plain day* <? light broken into thejail and lynehed a negro who committed assault and' battery, had ordered his unoffending sons to leave the county by a fixed date this month, and had ter rorized the entire negro population of that county, South Carolina was shocked. ,,. Lynching has not yet disappeared in this State, but it has been confined to the execution of negroes guilty of the two highest crimes on the calendar?murder and rape. uSch a situation as that in Abbeville /in more than one phase is without precedent T Lawlessness there seems to know no '% limits. It appears to be well-organiz( ed and powerful, openly intimidating and keeping the law in its own hands. J V * ' Abbeville has enjoyed a fair name p for the observance of law and order. In that county live some of the best citizens of the State, in whose veins runs the blood of fearless and emi f nently distinguished South Carolinians of the golden era ofiour history. Abbeville has not been regarded as a ' .lawless county, but as conservative and law-abiding. How can the outrages jfcere be accounted for? Who ->< is responsible? The case is not simiV lar to the Phoenix riot. The Abbeville negroes are , not up in arms &V7 / against the whites. No outbreak '; 1' among them has happened. - * &** V. Not only Abbeville, but South Carolina also jhas been given a bad fname by the reign of lawlessness I;-: there- The news has been flashed , over the country, unaccompanied by ^ ^ <' an explanation of any sort, and Abbeville and South Carolina have been evilly advertised as lawless aihd bru>.
