Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1916. & " I. I The First Primary. The first primary in the democratic party has come and gone. Some of us know more now than we thought we knew. Some of us were disappointed at the result. We hoped for the election of Mr. Cooper in the governor's race, and we confidently expected that he would be in the second race, and then be nominated. But we found that the people of the state are not ready ' for a non-factional governor. They still want politics with frills and thrills, and it takes v that to satisfy them. Mr. Cooper could offer them nothing j satisfying along that line. He | offered much that was for the | good of the state, but who cares for the state, when the V 7 interest of the particular candidate is at stake? After it is all over, and we look back, it seems to us under all the circumstances that Mr. Cooper ran a good race, even if he did not get the sup 4 ( . port we had hoped for and expected. The entire press of the state, with the exception of a half dozen weeklies and one or two dailies in the Piedmont, was against him. Mr. Cooper's support had to come from the people who read these pav pers, and when they were distinctly unfriendly to him, it seems remarkable that he ran as well as he did. But we always lose, anyway. rill* <-* 4-l%n4" UTA ni?A n 1 I ? jiue rettsun is tuat we aic ctiways for the best mari^ and the best man wins only in off 4 years. Mr. Cooper will come again, we hope. The state will need him yet, and his talents and ability entitled him to a place in the procession, meanwhile the Republic still lives. Some Cprrections. Some weeks ago we had a A*? TVft* T i /yr>r> I num XVLJL. juigun^ ui Townville, S. C., in which he referred to Lebanon church in this county and the many good men who had helped to make it a power for good in the community. By an eror of the typesetter the name of James Pursley was written James Pressly. There was another error in the paper itself. In naming the French Huguenots who settled in Abbeville county, Mr. Ligon mentioned the Hem mingers. We believe that the present day Hemmingers are connected by marriage with the Huguenot families on the Savannah side, but the Hem f ' \ mingers are not Huguenots. According to our information < they are Scotch. In Ramsey's History of South Carolina will be found the names of a good j many people then living, some ] in Abbeville county, who are t more than a hundred years i old, and others nearing^that 1 age. Among those in this coun- } ty is mentioned a Mr. Hem- 1 minger, a Scotchman, who is 1 believed to be the progenitor < of the Heminger family in Ab- J beville county. , We mention these matters in 1 order that the truth of history may be preserved. i - 1 ( , Many Thanks. > All of the young ladies con- ( nected with the Abbeville telephone office as well as the employees of the Western Union telegraph office, deserve the thanks of the newspapers and the people of the community ; generally for the excellent ser-.. vice they gave in handling the election returns last Tuesday ' night. The returns from Ab- . beville and adjacent counties were secured in remarkably short time by the young ladies at the telephone office. . , This applies to little Edwin Barksdale at the Western-.Un- < ion Telegraph office, who j livered the State returns. j The people should also thjank j Mr. Clyde Graves, who operat- j ed the lantern which flashed j A"l ?^4-1-. -r.no r\Yl cnropn The 1 I'jLI'/ 1 t^tUI HO \J 11 uuv uv* WM? ? __ use of the lantern was by courtesy of Rev. H,. W. Pratt. It was splendid service all the way through. The whole thing was iwell planned and , well carried out. Election re- ! turns were never handled j more satisfactory in Abbeville j than they were last Tuesday i night. ( j i v \ 1 No Second Fiddle. I "It is rumored here that Brother William P. Greene of the Abbeville Press and Banner wil be a candidate for lieutenant-governor in 1918 on 1 the Cooper ticket. He'd make a ( good one, but we hope he will not have to expose himself to the Ger- I mans as a qualification for the office, a 'la St. Andrew Bethea, al- 1 though he is a "corisarned" good fifhter, both in his newspaper and in his proper person." 2 The above is taken from the J esteemed Greenville News. ' We shall tell our friend a J story. ^Several years ago a < gentleman from Abbeville * ? county took a trip to Texas. ( He raised so much more Cain i in that state than any other j man who had ever visited it i that it was decided that he- was ] < insane, and consequently .he J was committed-' to the insane asylum. It happened in that s particular institution that ev- j ery afternoon the patients ( were marched about t h e j grounds, being led by one of < their number appointed for 1 that purpose, the others fol- ( 1 i-n ro TVlP Smith 1U VV lllg 111 |/uii u. J.?V - Carolinian took his place in the ranks the first day and marched under the regular leader, but on the following day, when the procession was about to start he appeared at 1 the head of the column, and told the erstwhile leader that 1 hp would head that crowd of t I d d lunatics or quit the j asylum.
